JCBR wrote:To qualify for Gold you need 30 or more recently 40 TP per year.
Therefore if you have been Gold for 10 years you must have at least 300 TP so why add that as a condition of lifetime ?

Because it says "on Virgin Atlantic flights".

That excludes all those yummy TPs earned on partner airlines, such as SQ SIN-KUL for example.........

We'll have to wait for someone to post.

I've sent half a dozen questions into VS, if you have others let me know and I'll add them. My questions are:

For the ten year Au membership and 300 TP category of Gold for Life:

• Is there a limitation on how TPs are earned (e.g. on Virgin Atlantic only flights / codeshares / any earned TP say from a partner airline)?
• A year for this purpose is a calendar year or a Flying Club year?
• When does the ten years start, from the date someone first becomes Gold or other?
• If people attain Gold from say Amex Centurion or a company scheme does that, or does it not apply?

For the >1,000,000 miles category:

• What is the definition of a base mile (is it so base miles = miles flown plus cabin bonus, or is it just miles flown, or is it another formula such as base miles plus FC tier bonus included)?
• Can you confirm this only applies to VS metal – i.e. no partner airlines, codeshares, or other miles earning?

Theres more info now on the website - Flying Gold Benefits

Gold for life: If you have been a Gold Flying Club Member for 10 consecutive years and earnt 300 tier points within those 10 years we will award you with Gold Membership for life at the end of the 10th year! You don’t need to do anything you will receive all the information about this and the benefits in your end of year membership pack.+

Well spotted Penny!

At least they have clarified that partner airline TPs don't count. Codeshares? I assume not, but why can they never be 100% clear. Also good to know what a base mile is.

So I think what they are saying is that the clock starts ticking the day you qualify for your first gold card; hence this implies any VS tier points earned to achieve this don't then count towards the magic 300?

So basically you have to then qualify ANOTHER 10 times to get gold life. So you actually need to be gold 11 times over 10 years and 10 months to qualify.

Hi there,

Is there a simple way to find out one's "base flown miles on Virgin Atlantic flights."

Will Virgin CS give this to you over the phone? It seems it's not displayed anywhere online in my Flying Club account.

Cheers,

Yes - there is a 'fix' I posted on page 2 of this thread that will show you all transaction on your FC account and then you download that into excel and then do some manipulation.

Thanks for the 'fix', but it's so time consuming to manipulate this into a total base flown miles.

I might just ask Virgin for my number. Has anyone else tried this?

Yes Virgin does know your number - I am still waiting for confirmation on this but AFAIK base flown miles = the journey distance in miles, not the definition of base miles per the VS web site. So totalling the earned miles via the FC view you can get doesn't actually help.

Just a thought...

So, it's "for life" - but what if your account actually expires through no activity (over 3 years). Granted, the chances are remote for most who have hit the 10 years gold threshold, but I wonder.... When you re-activate, is your "lifetime" still valid ?|

That's an interesting question. If the T&Cs are drafted sensibly, you would imagine that they would demand 10 years of continuous membership. But I wonder whether they've thought of this point...

Ah, sorry - may not have been clear.

I didn't mean in order to qualify (as that does indeed need 10 consecutive years). This is more *after* you get given lifetime gold, what happens if your 3 year inactivity account closure occurs...?

Ah, sorry, I was being slow. I see what you mean.

To me, lifetime means lifetime... but maybe they'll say 'lifetime provided you maintain a live account'.

It's a good question.

If you are not using your 'lifetime' account for 3 consecutive years then maybe you should re-consider if you are still alive ?

Sorry to restart this topic.
Anyone managed to clarify the rules on AU for life. I have asked two call centre staff and they don't seem to have a clue unfortunately!

Hold Au for 10 consecutive years and during those 10 years earn at least 300TPs... 8D

When that is well and done, keep the account active so the miles don't expire with at least one transaction every three years - technically if you were inactive for 3 years and your account was closed you would still be entitled to Au but you'd have to open a new account and begin collecting those miles again.. Not sure that is an eventuality that will come about though :P

Thats 300TP earned on VS metal, not partner airlines

Joey, thanks for your ‘smiley’ response; however your answer is actually something that still needs clarification! If you read my earlier posts what is 10 years with VS? For instance with KLMs platinum for life you need 10 years, but their system is very simple as a year is January to December. However a VS membership year is 13 months. So what I have been trying to clarify is does this mean you need to hold Au for 10 membership years, which is nearly 11 calendar years!

As Slinky wrote in his earlier post not only does this need clarification, but in addition when does counting start. Does the clock start on getting your first gold (in which case you lose the tier points used to gain status in the first place…..) or at some other point?

Important details have still not been clarified.

Also a friend was chatting to me recently and he thinks it will take about 12/13 years of constant Au to rack up with 300 VS tier points. Will this qualify or do the 300 TPs have to be in 10 years exactly?

I don't follow the maths here. If someone has been Au for 10 years then by virtue of that they would have at least 400TP (or somewhere over 300 on the old counting). so why would you need 12/13 years ?

One could conceivably have less than that in VS earned TPs, if they had warned a number of TPs flying other airlines.
