I just logged in to check some of my flight details for my impending Las Vegas trip and there was the "bid up to Premium Economy" option. Not seen that before.

Stuck a few quid on it, we'll see what happens.

No. As the page I linked to states

To make a bid you have to have booked flights with Virgin Atlantic ...
(or over the phone with vs)

apart from learning about the bids on this thread and reading the link provided by tontybear I have never seen this on my MMBs for previous flights to NRT. Is this route specific?

Thanks Penny

It's also the first I've seen of the bid thing, I will write back here with the news. I bid pretty much the lowest amount possible (the range was set between about £200 and £600 per leg for a PE upgrade only) so I'm not feeling that optimistic, but what the hell.

They did not notify me by mail or anything like that, I only spotted it because I happened to log into Flying Club.

I'm not a jet setter by any stretch of the imagination, but my choice these days is to always book direct with Virgin. They consistently get a better price than any of the search websites. The only strange part is that I have to call them to book a through ticket out of Belfast as they don't allow booking through tickets online.

I have the option to use "Your Bid" showing in MMB for my flights to Dubai in September. I'm travelling economy out and PE on the return. I have found that at DXB they usually have a good cash offer or I have used miles and have even been given an op up to Upper class. y)

Is it always set at a minimum or can it vary? My upcoming flight has PE upgrades starting at £164 inc tax each way. At this money I'll cheap out and stay in economy but if it was to get into double figures as the flight approached I might be tempted to stick a bid in!

Don't know where you're going but £164 sounds pretty good to me - I'd be amazed if it goes any lower.

I agree.
If you want to go PE I would go for it.

Just got the mail saying that my bid was unsuccessful.

I'd love to know how they work this out; I imagine they sort all the bids in descending offer order and then fill all the seats from the top down.

Yes will be something like that but looking at the number of seats available against the bids so even if the top bid is from a party of 4 but only 3 seats available they'd go down to the next highest bid etc etc

They may factor in FC status if there is a tie on the number of seats available and the bids submitted.
