I feel a bit stupid asking this, but what's the situation with earning and spending miles with Delta? Can I use flying clubs points to book flight with Delta or do I need to sign up to their flying club equivalent? I'd like to think I can use both seamlessly, but I suspect that isn't so....

You should be able to use VS miles with DL just give flying club (vs) a call.

You can earn and redeem FC miles on DL but cannot use miles to upgrade.
Also, when booking on DL you have to book a roundtrip.

But equally you can't use DL miles to upgrade on a VS flight.

This is an alliance not a merger and for example you can't use BA avios to upgrade an AA flight and vice versa

Not being able to upgrade using VS miles is a bummer for sure, but the benefits of this partnership is seriously rewarding for people like myself who now reside in the US.

I hit 40 tier points some 7 months before I was due to renew my GC, and now thanks to the alliance between Delta and Virgin am on target to hit 80 before I do renew. I earn 1 TP per flight here in the US, regardless of whether it's a 1 hour flight or more. I've done 3 flights this week = 6. Just one business class ticket earns you 3 TPs, even if you travel under 3000 miles. As a GC holder, you are automatically added to the upgrade list, though the chances of that ever coming to an actually upgrade are slim, due to the fact they reward their own Sky Miles top tier passengers first.

I'm seriously reaping the rewards here. Hopefully as this relationship matures, we'll be able to spend our on both carriers.
