Hi guys and gals
Hope you are enjoying this autumnal weather
Anyway my question is do any of you or have any of you suffered from bloating after long haul flights? My missus suffers quite badly and her whole body seems a bit bloated.
Any ideas? Perhaps food or drink to avoid before during and just after arrival ?

I tend to feel very bloated after an UC flight but that may have something to do with the champagne ,beer, red wine ,white wine and port I normally consume with the food on board !

When I was 6 months pregnant (years ago) I flew to Singapore, I disembarked with ankles that were the size of elephant legs.

It took 3 days of sitting on the pool edge with them dipped in to get back to normal.

I am pleased to say it is the only time I have ever experienced jet bloat (I think that's what they call it).

Google 'flight oedema'.

I read somewhere its carbs cause it...the recommendation was eat little and often, protein not carbs, no fizzy drinks, no alcohol (blasphemy) and lots of water...............now I Have to say I have twice done an alcohol free flight and I definitely felt a lot better for not drinking...did I maintain this temperate status ? He** no

you could also try the anti-gas tablets/liquids like peptisol

Have suffered similar issues and often find a pizza and glass of wine at the other end goes some way to settle things. How bizarre is that???? Had always assumed though that the issue is to do with gqs in your body expanding at altitude. I have no idea where that theory came from though....

Lol ! That's would be me too !!!!
But it must be something like what happens to a bag of pretzels or similar. The bag they are in is always fit to burst when you have them on a plane, so I am guessing anything with air in it will do the same ?!?!?!

;)

That makes three of us, I often emerge at the other end feeling bloated and have a reduced appetite for a day or two.

Flying always makes me ummm gassy alcohol or not. I now if drinking alcohol also guzzle at least one large bottle of water plus the small one in your seat. Oh, and flights over 3 hours wear flight socks or end up with elephant ankles. The gas though does come out in flight and after ;-) Chatting with crew they also gain an " Atlantic baby"

The worst thing that affects me on long-haul flights is not bloating but the dryness of nasal passages! The temptation to pick my nose is virtually irresistible :0 :$

Lol that's pretty HL lol
Well we are debating the carbs issue as mentioned up thread and also perhaps avoiding salty foods? So perhaps requesting a low salt meal? Does anyone have any experience of this ?

I've never been brave enough to order a special meal in UC however have had the low fat option in PE and that has always been very nice and not a bloating

Well after my last flight back from orlando, 2 old biddies who were sat in front of us in premiun econ, were chatting to each other and the old guy 80ish said to his wife also 80ish, I dont know whats up with me i have not stopped farting since we boarded 5hrs ago, and when i went down to the toilet 2 other guys said the same to me, and they started laughing. :$ They then turned around to me and said the cc said with all the methane on this flight tonight we could turn the engines off and float home. :0 This is the worst flight for bad smells i have worked on for a long time, and a baby in econ has just pooped his nappy, and everybodys were feeling sick.lol. :$ :$ The older people called themselves old biddies, im just repeating it. :#

Depending how bad your problem is : eat BEFORE you fly, drink nothing but water on the flight and before boarding take any wind tablets/chews that suit you, chew one/two on flight (depending on length of flight)and you should be fine when you land and able to eat as per usual. Husband used to suffer terrible but a pilot friend said the above is what a lot of pilots on long haul do. Husband tried it and it has worked for him ever since, other wise he used to be so bad with pain of bloating that he is was physically sick. God bless knowledgeable pilot friend.

Have found that, if flying UC, keeping feet up a lot seems to prevent swollen feet/ankles. Guess it's a case of gravity....
