Hello :)

That's my first topic here as well But i used to read v-flyer from a long time.

I booked first haul fight in my life with virgin Atlantic ( MAN-LAS VS085/086) in just economy. I'm quite scared because before I just flew around the Europe with ryanair and flybe.

My flight is the VS085 out and VS086 back with 747.400 but I have absolutely no idea which seat will be a great solution and even how meal works during the flight. I can't understand as well the difference between Economy and PE even because the upgrade for me will cost £200 on top on outward flight and 1500!! for the back one. Is it really worth that much the PE ? even actually on seat selection most of the economy class seems empty.

I'm so confused and of course I can't pay more than 1 and half bag just for the PE. I paid 755 my round trip in economy.

Any idea or any suggest, tips clue? i'll appreciate it!

thank you so much :)

Premium Economy gives you a larger seat with more leg room and your meals served on proper plates. In economy you have a choice of 3 main meals served with a starter and desert.

Later in the flight you will get afternoon tea (sandwich an cake) and you may get an icecream or a snack in the middle of the flight

Drinks and meals are all free with drinks available from the crew throughout your flights and sometimes in the galley to help yourself.

PE can be a justifiable for a bit more comfort on a long flight.

The seat selection may look empty as not all passengers pre select a seat so things fill up at check in.

I would choose a seat either at the front of the main cabin in economy or if you can one of the seats upstairs for a quieter flight.

Hope I have answered some of your questions. Try searching for trip reports for Your flights or the LGW-LAS flights (VS44 I think)
Any more questions just ask

Hi
I would say £200 extra for PE one sector is worth the cost. You will notice the difference on long haul.
£1,500 though for one sector is not worth it. You could probably upgrade one sector to UC for that.
I would recommend taking some extra snacks too though as I always got hungry flying in Y or PE and my blood sugar level would be yelling at me lol

All right, thanks so much for explanation. I think I'll upgrade for PE on outward flight and not for the backward even if I cannot understand how a PE could cost 1500£ on Top.

what about the blanket and a pillow? I need to buy that stuff? I don't know how cold could be an haul flight.

Cold? On a long haul flight? Unlikely tbh
There were some discussions about cabin temperature a while back. Basically I and quite a few others here have not been cold on a long haul flight. That said you will get a blanket. I usually take my own mini beanie pillow when travelling PE.

Amenity kits usually contain:
Pair of socks
Eye patch
Ear plugs
Toothbrush and toothpaste
And a pen (for filling out landing card/customs card-depending on destination)

Hey Slackyster

First off I would say welcome to V-Flyers and enjoy your first long haul flight with VS..!

With regards to being worried, dont be! What you have experianced with Ryanair and Flybe is not comparative to VS - my wife described Economy on a flight with VS to Upper Class with any other low cost airline. You will notice a difference, straight away!

Dont be afraid to ask for things you want on the flight, as long as its not taking the ripp! But a pillow or two and a blanket will be given if you are cold. I know what you mean by this and I often get cold on planes, even when others dont...

With regards to PE - I would pay the extra up to about £300 per pax. I have indeed just upgraded my return flights from JFK for £180 and its well worth it. Over £300 and I would start to question it - over £600 and no chance... I would check those prices again closer to the time, they will no doubt change.

Also, the food will be decent, again I felt like I had eaten too much on my last econ flight - although I had been battering the bloody mary's all flight... I just cant say no to a free vodka based drink it seems!

From what I can tell looking at the seat plans etc - there is no power to EC seats in a 747. I beleive that VS085 is a 747 - but I stand to be corrected. This may be the excuse you were looking for to upgrade!

I did notice you asked about the meal - its free and normally pretty good - look on the website and it will give you an idea, also within moderation drinks are free too...

Power connection is on Premium Economy and not on Economy Class. That's why I'll upgrade for just 200£ more on outward flight. But I'm still not sure If I need any adapter.

does anybody knows something about that?

You won't get an amenity kit in PE on the MAN-LAS flight as it's a day sector.

Virgin have enhanced them away claiming that customers don't use them enough on day flights.

As far a I know they have standard 3pin uk plug socket under the seat or a USB outlet built in to the touchscreen.

Regarding onboard power sockets, remember that they only meant to be used to power your device while using and not for simply charging your device while sleeping

I been thinking to call the booking line to try to get a better deal for upgrade on return flight. anybody thinks that there is any chance to get a cheaper price for upgrade by phone?

I think the prices are pretty much the same. Or at least the times I have called up they have been!

I call the booking line when my dates are flexible and I am hoping to find reward seats. I've done *some* research but as I tend to over analyze everything, I ask for help from the booking team! Always found them to be very helpful.

I phoned up the virgin call center and even they don't know how to connect my laptop on PE plug. The person on the phone said to me that may be a kensington laptop connection or maybe something else.

Can't believe ! None knows how to connect a laptop in PE on a 747 Virgin flight? O_o that's impossible! i think will be my last flight with virgin!

If you are flying on a 747 MAN-LAS then there is a normal UK plug socket at the bottom of the middle console between the 2 seats - just take your UK plug socket and away you go.

Final a got the answer from the maintenance service of virgin. that's the quote

"On our new refurbished 747's (which will be operating your flight) we actually have standard UK and US power sockets in our Premium Economy and Upper Class cabins, so no adaptor is necessary. However, we don't have power available in our Economy cabin."

hope will be useful for eveyone :)
