From Dublin, Virgin are competing with nonstop flights to New York.

So for the inconvenience of flying via Heathrow, they offer a discounted rate.

From Heathrow, Virgin are competing with other nonstop airlines and will match what they offer, and will most likely be undercut by Aer Lingus, offering a Dublin connection!

The reason for this is that Air Travel Tax from Dublin, Cork and Shannon is €3 as opposed to the exorbitant APD in the UK. IIRC, you do not pay APD if you connect in the UK from another country so not bizarre at all.
