Just a quick one...

If I book a flight for 2 people to JFK or Newark and fly premium ec, is it possible to use air miles to upgrade to UC? If so how many miles would it take and how could I find out if this is available for my intended travel dates?

Or can I upgrade at the airport if it's available and how much would it work out there? As I know there is more UC seats on the NYC flights.

Or I am happy to pay for economy (£779.00) and upgrade to UC that way if possible but what's the best way to check before booking the actual flight first and I would want to upgrade outbound and inbound also?

Thanks & look forward to some views

The most common way is to buy M class economy fares and use miles to upgrade to UC which would be 80,000 altogether ie 2 people both ways ,the best thing to do is ring the flying club as they will be able to tell you all you need to know before you book anything

It's risky to wait until the airport, as there is no certainty that there will be any miles seats available. There might be some now, but that doesn't mean they will still be there on the day.

Is an m class a regular economy ticket? And it would be 20,000 each way per person correct?

Also if I have 60,000 miles and my girlfriend has 20,000 can we use them that way? Or do we have to have 40,000 each?

An M class is the cheapest fare upgrade able with miles, it is usually not the fare quoted when you search normally, you can search for an M fare through the upgrade option on the flying club part of Vs website.

Also be aware that on top of that price for an M fare you will need to add the extra tax for upper class, it is 20k miles per person each way to upgrade and it's no problem using 60k of yours and 20k of your other half's

M fare return is available from £620.65 per person then approx £150 extra per person tax to upgrade to upper and your 80k miles

So expect £770 ish and 40k miles per person

2nd to 7th is avail UC into JFK and out of EWR though only the early flight home

So it would be £770 per person?? And my miles?

Would it be best to maybe call the flying club and explain what I want to do and the. They can give me figures?

I want to upgrade to UC as cheap as possible really :L as I suppose everyone does

That would be the cheapest way of flying UC, ringing them is the best way, though you sometimes need to tell them what you want and that you have checked avail. There was choice of 2 flights going out and just 1 back!

From what I've learned on here since I joined earlier this year, the combination above is the cheapest way to upgrade to UC, and if I were you, I'd be on the phone of FC today to bag those G's because they might be gone tomorrow. As advised earlier, make sure your girlfriend has given consent for you to use her account and then go for it. You can do the whole process on the phone. FC will book you an M class fare if it's available and then do the miles upgrades for you all at the same time.

I've just checked and they're still available. VS003 into JFK, VS018 from EWR. Use this link if you want to check them again: http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/fr ... /index.jsp

They won't be the long I think.
All the best,

Thanks for your help so far, I'm currently really busy today so won't make the phone call but tomorrow I will ring them up and get myself added to my girlfriends flying club account to speak on her behalf and hopefully book some UC. Seats tomorrow. Do you think if I manage to bag them that we will be able to be seated opposite or 1 behind the other?
To be honest the £770 each + 40,000 isn't to bad for UC seats considering I could do 55,000+ £399.98 each for just premium

The FC will tell you what seats are available to request once you've worked out what flights you want

Brilliant hopefully we can sort something out with them tomorrow. It would be so much cheaper. Even if I booked a UC with air miles I would still have to pay £1,000 in taxes so this way would save me money as it would work out £1,400 plus miles for 2 of us and we can take advantage of the lounge.

Also with the drive thru check in can I get dropped off by a family member or can I drive and still use it?

You will have to get dropped off by someone else, doesn't matter who as long as you book a slot and give them the relevant information they require

Yes you will
The necessary information will be found on your MMB
Personally I think that price is awesome
You would be looking at that same price just to go economy on some long haul destinations
Waiting till tomorrow is quite a gamble though I have to say I would be finding a way to call them right away

I do agree the price is great if I look back at my holiday just gone I would have loved to have paid £1400 + miles :(

Do you think seat choice would be good? I would like to sit next to my other half and wouldn't be too happy if she was half way backwards?

I am going to ring up tomorrow and give it a go and if the seats are available then I think it is meant to be!
So I will ring them up tomorrow morning and go from there and hopefully they can assist me into getting some UC seats

Fairly sure seat choice wouldn't be a problem! FC will be able to confirm that before you book, or take a look on expert flyer!

I will definitely look at expert flyer, will it show me seats that are already taken (seat map) or just the availability?

Also I will try ring up but I'll let you all know how it goes if I get the seats

Edit: can anyone tell me how I can check on expert flyer? I've tried looking at the seat maps and availability and it's not working for me?

I just checked the seat map of the VS3 on the 2nd it an A330 so new dream suite lots of seats free down middle of cabin that you could sit next to each other nada couple at back of cabin which would let you sit opposite each other (across the aisle)

I just checked availability and then asked for seat map on EF

Oh I see maybe it was because I was trying on my iPhone or entered info wrong. Also a flighty be on a vs25 and looks like the 7pm flight arriving at JFK 10:25 pm? Is there Availability on there?

VS 25 is a a340 so older suite preferred by many, and is basically wide open on seating plan, many many options for you to sit together!

You say older suite? Is this like the re fits on the 747 planes? And will they have the Vera systems also? I don't mind that style of seating but how can I tell what planes have the new suites if I go on EF?

The a330 all have the new suite which is not liked by many on here. Every other plane has the older suite which is preferred by most, the refits were only done on LGW 747's and they all still have the older suite. The a340 has Vera on demand but not touchscreen like the a330, given the choice id take the A340 everyday of the week In seats 10-11a which are available at the moment.

Edit: Those seats are my preference on the A340 others like 2-3-4 k I think but they were occupied on map

The Return VS018 is an A330 so newer suite and also has plenty of seats available for you to sit together.
