I was a bit surprised when flying from Edinburgh to London recently with BA that photo ID was never checked.

I had checked in online, then at Edinburgh airport only had to scan my boarding card to get access to the security check point.

Once in the departure hall, was queuing to board with my boarding pass in my passport but the BA agent just pulled out the boarding card and never looked in the passport.

Just wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences as normally I find gate staff check boarding card AND passport.

EDIT:Changed subject and contents from passport to Photo ID as I appreciate you dont need passport when travelling domestic, it was more the lack of photo Id that got me

Yes that is normal - I never take / need my passport when travelling BA / VS London to Scotland.

I do carry my photo driving licence just in case as a proof of id.

Why would you need your passport? You're not leaving the country (at least not yet!).

For security reasons you need photo ID when checking bags - and Little Red sometimes ask for it regardless at check in - but that can be a driving licence or other recognised form of ID.

As most of my travel includes a shuttle down to London, we need to check bags in and my passport/photo ID is always asked for at the checkin desks.

I don't think I have ever been asked for an ID at the gate when travelling internally, only for the boarding pass.

For domestic only flights, I've always been asked for photo ID at check-in (certainly at MAN & LHR) but as others have said, it's never required again at the gate.

I never carry my passport for domestic travel and just use my photo driving licence.

Most UK airports now take your photo at some point as you enter security for domestic flights and this is matched to you as you scan your boarding pass again at the gate (or as you enter the domestic gate area at LHR in T1 and for T5 flights, the first of the 2 desks at the departure gate is this check). This is just to make sure you have not swapped boarding passes with anyone else as most airports now mix international and domestic pax in their departure lounges.

I remember reading at one point UK boarder agency wanted finger print scans for this check but that was denied so the photo system was the compromise.
