Hi guys,

I have been scouring the forum looking up hints and tips on the best way to fly UC (without paying crazy amounts of course!) I see lots of people mention buying an 'M' and then upgrading using miles to UC. My question is, how do you know what an 'M' (or any other face code) costs using the Virgin website? Or would I only be able to know this by calling up the CC?

Basically my end goal is to get myself and my partner a return flight to LVG in either PE or UC and I am trying to figure out the best way to do this, ie. use points outright or buy an EC/PE and upgrade to PE/UC.

Both of us are flying to Cancun soon on a reward redemption and I am wondering if we should use miles booster to help us get to our goal of LVG in December 2014/January 2015. Currently my partner has 75K miles in his account, I have 10K, we both have the Virgin Amex (potentially my partner will get the AMEX PE upgrade voucher as we have been spending alot recently).

Hope that makes sense and you experts can help me on this journey. ?|

Hi,

To look at a specific fare code you need to go in tot he flying club section of the VS website, under the spend miles section, click cabin upgrades. It will then bring the flight search function, but also have a drop box to select a specific fare code.

The biggest issue you need to overcome first, mid find reward seats on dates that suit you. LAS is a popular destination, and only has the small 14 UC cabin, and while the PE cabin is large, it's very popular, so reward seats are more difficult to come by. One option to seriously consider is flying in to SFO/LAX and getting an internal flight to Vegas, as the LHR based a/c have much larger UC cabins and therefore more chance of reward seats.

Of course, the cheapest way is a full miles reward, 100k per person, however you are quite short of that target, so a M economy fare upgraded to UC with miles for 50k pp is more achievable, but still quite a way off, as you would need at least 25k in your account, or your partner would need to get up to 100k.

The key to this, is, getting the reward availability, and if you get it, grab it as soon as you can, flights will soon start being released for your dates, so you will need to start looking soon, but be patient as it could be a few months before they become available, so having back up plans is also important,

Remember, though, that you'll need to add a bit more (probably £100-200) for the additional taxes & fees for the class you're upgrading into.
