Chance of being upgraded.......

Afternoon all,

My partner and I are due to travel from Gatwick to MCO next week and we got engaged at Christmas. She thinks there is an outside chance that if we tell check in at the airport about our news that we could get upgraded. I disagree and think there is a 0% chance haha.

Any opinions as to the chance of this happening? Extremely happy for you all to say I'm wrong

Just a little tale for you. When we got married in DisneyWorld in Florida many years ago, we flew Virgin, as we do. They knew we were flying out with a party to get hitched. After discussions about a booking issue, my in-laws have bad knees and they sat us in the bubble, they just upgraded the two in-laws. Not the couple getting married. :0 :0 Cannot tell you how impressed I was with that little stunt !

Fingers crossed for you though. Don't forget, once you cross over, there is no coming back. You will be starting threw the curtains forever more, wishing you where the other side.......

It's probably more likely that you won't get you upgraded if you mention it, IMO. Check In staff will have heard it all before.

If you are staying in a hotel do mention it to them. Hotels are more likely to do something. Although not necessarily a upgrade.

When my daughter flew VS to St Lucia after her wedding the FSM announced during the flight that there were 6 couples on honeymoon and brought them all a glass of champagne.

When I got married we flew AA to our honeymoon (I know, I know...). I mentioned it to the agent but slipped up by calling my new wife my girlfriend -- which if you think about it is a perfectly reasonable mistake! But I don't think it helped my chances! The reply was: 'we don't do that, maybe British Airways does'. It wasn't a great flight ...

Do try it at hotels though, americans love it - when just married and having our certificate and all being on honeymoon...
We got nothing on VS.
But **every** hotel in US we visited on our tour done something. Free wine, free food, best hotel (one of the anaheim ones in LA) gave a $150 comp to be spent on food in hotel restaurants on a 4 night stay. Be genuine is the best tip, I think for us doing a 3000 ish mile driving tour over many parts of US made the check-in ladys very happy to have a chat with us - as some places we visited didn't have many british visitors.

I don't expect upgrades on any airline, doing at least one long haul a month with work (and a short haul also typically), VS silver, BA Silver (at mo) - I've been upgraded once in 10 years (on VS incidentally). But I really wouldn't expect it on a holiday route - PE is very popular on holiday routes, and UC is a tiny cabin to MCO. Airlines now only upgrade if overbooked, and only some routes get economy/PE overbooked.

That just shows how many other honeymooners could be "looking" for an upgrade and so making pretty unlikely to happen.
But I think the champagne was a nice touch. Nice on VS y)

There was an entertaining thread on FT a while ago where that contributor was complaining that an airline had not made enough fuss of him on his birthday ie none!

I would love someone to explain to me why they expect any corporate (ignoring hotels where they always have room "upgrades" to suit any necessity) to give them something because they have got engaged.

Engaged? This has equal or less weight to birthdays, your star sign, getting married or divorced, conceiving your first or eighth child in the hotel last night, your dog having puppies, your cat getting run over, owning a Porsche or you being seen on Jeremy Kyle ie none.

Specifically re airlines, the only people who should have any chance of a free upgrade are the frequent flyers of whichever airline it is.

I concur though with gfonk - Virgin will usually offer champagne from UC cabin for couples who are on honeymoon or getting married if they are aware. A wedding I was going to in Vegas the couple getting married got this treatment - again about 6 couples on plane!

As a frequent flyer, I said much the same at the time - I'd prefer any frequent flyers to be upgraded ahead of the friend getting married. One represents a high value to airline, one does not.

I remember my brother years ago walking up to check-in telling the staff he had just got married and was going on his honeymoon(to Mauritius), was there any chance of being upgraded 8D To which the Check-in Staff answered "Everybody on this flight is on their Honeymoon" ) so NO!

exactly! lol we didnt even bother to tell the checkin staff when we went on honeymoon but we did tell the hotel and they gave us some fruit and champagne on arrival
