Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to Hong Kong in October/ November and wanted to use my companion ticket. I just called up and the prices they gave me was extortionate.... £1700 in economy then £340 in tax for the companion fair.

Can anyone suggest a better more cost effective way to use companion ticket as I ideally wanted to travel uc.

Thanks. :|

Companion tickets are one of VS's big weaknesses compared to BA, who make them easier and cheaper to redeem.

The problem is you can only use them in conjunction with a full fare, flexible ticket which means it's often cheaper to pay for two discounted, non-flexible tickets.

Yes the VS companion tickets are useless, unless you're happy to pay for a fully flex fare in order to get one. BA is the opposite in that you can only get the companion fare by using Avios to purchase the first ticket, so in BA's case the companion ticket is a true freebie.

As others have said in the main it is pretty useless to the average traveller.
Sometimes when combined with an S PE fare it can work out cheaper than 2 K PE fares, but I've never seen it worth it in UC or Economy.
