No sorry, only 3 of the LHR A333's have WiFi installed (as a trial).

All the LGW/MAN 744's do have AeroMobile though so you can use your mobile to surf the net (as well as text and make/receive calls). It is rather slow though for data, as it only uses Edge connection speeds and can be expensive depending on the mobile data plan you have, as it uses international roaming.

Never tried the WiFi yet on VS, though apparently it's not much faster than AeroMobile anyway.

I have used both on a few flights, and found the WiFi to be faster than Aeromobile. It was never as fast as GoGo on DL/VX etc (given the technical differences I wouldn't have expected it to be) but I still found it noticeably faster than the Edge data connection each time I had the chance to use it.

Not currently. Unfortunately the 333's aren't able to fly that distance. No word on whether the trial has been successful yet, so no clue whether it'll be rolled out across the fleet. Chances are the Dreamliners will all be equipped with WIFI.

Yeah agreed. I'm with EE in the UK and have never been overly charged for using Aeromobile. Vodafone are renowned for slamming customers with extortionate roaming costs. The onboard WIFI can be very cost effective and can last the entire LON-NYC trip if you use webmail as opposed to Macmail or Outlook for example.

I don't know the answer to your question sorry, but interesting that the article mentions GoGo when VS are using T-Mobile for the hotspots on their Dreamliners?

GoGo would actually be better in some respects as you can pre-pay with GoGo before you board the A/C and select from various options as well, whereas with the current T-Mobile system that only gives you 1 x £14.99 24hours unlimited usage option which is a little on the pricey side.

Is the LGW one? knowing my luck it will be a MAN or LHR grrr

It won't be a LHR plane as the 747s are leaving the fleet. The LGW/MAN planes are interchangeable

Never (fitting of wi-fi) will be to soon for me, I have enjoyed flights being mobile & wi-fi free, I guess all good things must come to an end.

As an update to this thread, I don't believe any of the 747s are receiving wifi this year however in a tweet yesterday VS confirmed all planes in their fleet have it by 2017.

It was mentioned by virginboy747 here that XLG & ROS (LGW/MAN 744's) do now have WiFi installed (along with 2 A346's), but VS are just waiting for CAA approval before they can start using it.

I had exactly the same issue when flying to MIA on one of the A333's. Call / text worked, data didn't. I think the issue is that the EE roaming platform cannot determine where you are and so doesn't offer you the usual roaming data add-on landing page.

I have had data working previously though with EE on another A333 some time ago.

It was that thread that made me go looking as I remembered talk that all LGW 747s would have it by this summer. So at least some will have it soon, that's good news.

Will be interesting to see what restrictions the USA put on wifi usage in their airspace - given what they did with Aeromobile (for voice calls).

I know they are obsessed with security, but for years (even pre-9/11) there have been in-flight phones on many US carriers. More recently, pretty much every IFE handset is also a phone. So you can use the airlines phone, but not Aeromobile when in US airspace.

Ditto with websites like Flightradar24.com - the USA insist that FAA radar data is delayed by 5mins - I somehow think that someone planning something bad can afford a SBS box to get live data should they so wish.

I have used the wifi on Emirates going to Dubai - and whilst not cheap, it was very fast. Was amazing how quickly you used us $15 of data. I fully agree with blocking VOIP services on the core sleep-time on overnight flights though - but there is nothing to stop someone from swiping their card through the IFE handset and making voice calls (where the facility exists, which as above, it often does).

I did VLIP and VXLG at the beginning of August and neither was enabled (aeromobile only). Does anyone know where we are with decent connectivity on the 747s? I'm on the 43 next week and am wondering what my chances of getting internet are.
