Children in UC

I am wondering what people opinions are of children in UC?

I am flying LHW-LAX in December, we are 2 adults and 5 children (9, 7, 6, 2, 1) and are doing both legs in UC.

Personally, I think the same as any other cabin.

We always made sure our kids didn't trouble other passengers. Mrs S would buy new things etc to keep them amused.

Being in U/C should be no different and if you have paid for the seats they have every right to be there.

My kids have all grown up now but my experience has always been that the VS crews have always been excellent with the kids in UC. I remember flying to LAX during the school holidays and the cabin was full of kids although they had put all the families on the A346 in rows 7 g to K down to the bar and single business passengers seemed to be in row A.

This worked perfectly so much so that majority of parents myself included fell asleep to wake up finding all the kids sat at the bar drinking mocktails made by a very wonderful attentive crew, so I would look forward to enjoying a great flight .

I don't think it's an issue at all - it's public transport and they are entitled to be there if they have a ticket. Good behaviour is as much a requirement of adults as of children, and in my experience adults are much more likely to be disruptive on a plane, largely due to alcohol. If the kids are running wild I'd say that that is also an issue for adults (the parents)... Have a good flight!

They have flown in PE before (well 4 of them have) and they all behaved impeccably. I am hoping UC will be a lot better as they are more likely to have a nap and there will also be a little more room for them to move around.

Yet interestingly you can still buy 6 UC seats for that flight (assuming you're on the VS75 on the 14th).

Which suggests they're prepared to overbook by at least 3 passengers.

I couldnt get UC for the outbound on Aug 14th, so we are PE then. UC is the return leg on 28th from MCO to MAN.

Ah ok - the VS76 is showing up as completely full in UC I'm afraid, so looks like there'll be 3 interlopers in your private cabin!

As at240 says, the more likely disturbance will come from the drunk businessman at the end of the bar. However I have also been on flights with kids trying to play a game of tag, tearing about the cabin and jumping over the seat divides!! Parents sitting there completely ignoring the fallout n( n(

There is a very fine line with this argument, but my view is simple, as long as the parents do their utmost to keep the little'uns from disturbing other pax I have no qualms. I'm sure you guys will be fine.

Wow, hope VS gave you a deal on all those seats. I almost feel sorry for the 3 outsiders ... then again you could always leave that plane with an extra three members to your family - you could subsequently book out the entire cabin in future

Yes, I bet the other 3 will feel like they've invaded a private party.

I don't care who my fellow travellers are as long as they aren't loud and are good natured. Some of the best have been those with small children. The last time we travelled with a young family near us, the children were amazingly well behaved.

When I flew back from LAS in Jan there was a family of four in UC - the two kids (about 6 and 3 I guess?) were impeccably behaved and when the older one woke up it was his birthday so the CC presented him with a huge bag of Lovehearts.

I suspect no-one else got any sweets for landing, but it was a lovely gesture!

Funny you should say that... was trading stories with a crew member once and he told me of one such instance.

Apparently after takeoff the mother opened the overhead and seeing the duvets stored in there decided to make her infant a bed in said overhead bin.. no one noticed until it came to meal service and the crew couldn't find the child.. "he's upstairs" was all they were told by the mother... on an A346

Needless to say, child rescued and returned to the mother's lap/bassinet for the remainder of the flight.

My kids have been in Upper Class, First class on Delta & Business class on AmAirlines many times. There is never an issue unless the child is badly behaved but as Joey says that applies to drunken adults too

I think ?| the OP has two flights booked.....one in August one in December, either that or its a lovely long break

Poorly explained by me.

In August I am doing MAN to MCO in PE and then MCO to MAN UC.

Then in December LHR to LAX in UC and then LAX to LHR in UC.

... and 5 children (9, 7, 6, 2, 1) ...

From my observations over the years, the children aren't badly behaved, it's the parents who think that the cabin crew are there to look after & entertain their children because they (the parents) are on holiday. Crew are highly trained for the safety of all passengers & colleagues on board.

Going slightly off topic, I recently read a sign in a shop in Orlando that stated that unaccompanied children were welcome & would be given a double expresso & free puppy before their parents were located. I know, I know, inappropriate but very funny.

Rest assured I am not one of those parents, my older kids will be fine, they have flown before and will entertain themselves with IFE system, iPads, Nintendo DS etc.

It is the two babies I am concerned about, babies can get very grumpy and be difficult to calm and soothe at times. One unhappy baby can easily cause another baby to become unhappy too. Fingers crossed they are both on their best behaviour

Ditto everyone else - I've been disturbed more by drunken stag parties than children and that fact you are in UC means they won't be kicking the back of someone's seat which is the most annoying thing. My son is 11 now but has autism and we put off flying in PE for ages because we were worried about ruining the flying experience for others. We fly in the bubble which is very quiet and the first time we did it I was on edge all the time worried incase someone disapproved of his being there but at the end of the day we have just as much right to sit where we want as anyone. I might be brave enough to come back UC on our next flight with him when he should be asleep most of the time. Hope you enjoy your flight - let us know how you get on

Babies & small children can cry because they know they can communicate with you. They are most likely trying to tell you that their ears hurt as the cabin pressure changes but, there are ways to try to minimise this.

I think it speaks volumes you are aware of this before you fly....just enjoy your flight. Your babies will no doubt pick up on your relaxed mood if you can let yourselves go.....
