I have seen a few posts that suggest asking about upgrades at the airport with miles or payment.

Where is you ask? Is it at baggage drop or some where else.

Going out of MCO in a week.

There is no option on Manage my flight. I am currently PE on a K

In the US, ask at check-in/bag drop. At the US airports they often display fixed prices for cash upgrades, if available.

If you want to use miles you'll have to pay to turn your K into an S though.

When and where are you flying? If it's next Saturday, be warned UC is virtually full on both the VS16 to LGW and the VS76 to MAN. Remember there are only 14 UC seats on those 747s so they fill up fast and upgrades can be very hard to come by.

If your checking in at downtown disney, you can ask then.

Post your flight details and we can see if upper has any seats left.

VS 16 on Saturday. will check in at the airport.

Personally I will be able to sleep in PE and we do have row 19 so no one behind us. But having seen posts suggesting enquiries at the airport I thought I'd give it a try.

VS016 on Sat 22nd
J1 C0 D0 I0 Z0 W4 S2 K1 Y3 B3 R3 L3 U3 M3 E0 Q0 X0 N0 O0

shows 1 seat left in Upper so virtually no chance of an upgrade - sorry.

OK, at check-in:
Still only one seat available
Yes Mrs. D can have it on a points upgrade.
Yes we need to pay to change the class of ticket to upgradeable.
The cost $1506.
I didn't really think that was proportionate so UC still has a vacant seat. Mrs D will have to suffer a night in PE

Chuffed to get from an O in economy to the last seat in Upper HKG to LHR at check in for 30K miles and just 70 GBP last week. I nearly fell over. Without doubt my best ever result with miles.

Well done! Anything is possible at the airport - particularly, it seems, at the foreign airports.

It would be a big risk to rely on getting an airport upgrade though - obviously if UC is full it won't happen. But when they've still got unsold seats on the day, it does seem they're often willing to fill them.

That's a great deal -- I suspect they forgot to add on the extra fuel surcharge. I upgraded from an O to UC from HKG a few days ago and it was roughly £85 fare difference plus £60 in fuel surcharge, plus the miles. For such a long flight, it is an amazing deal, but obviously you rely on UC availability which can be difficult ex-HKG.
