If you're travelling anywhere remote or to the US or Caribbean then a medical cover sum of £10 - £15 million is a good starting point as aeromed to a first world facility, i.e. JNB / CPT for Africa (or back to Europe) and MIA for the Caribbean, and subsequent treatment for serious illness or injury, is going to devour the medical expenses.

Check that the policy will cover multiple simultaneous claims.

Travelling with children suggests that you should ensure your cancellation cover is maximised.

Baggage cover is usually limited but some items may be covered, worldwide, under your household insurance.

If you look at the 'market leaders' i.e. household names, they are very expensive; go to the FT website and hit the personal finance section for the most competitive rates.

If there is a pre-existing medical condition then you will need a specialist broker e.g. AllClear. The usual advice pertains; declare everything as you will not want to find your policy has been invalidated because you didn't declare what you might deem a minor condition.
