Florida for me.

Having done both I too would plump for the Florida Keys. Mexico is great if you want Las Vegas-on-sea in Cozumel (a bit quieter to the south), but for me the Keys is more beautiful, has a greater variety of resorts, better food, and much better if you enjoy being on the water.

Being the US, are the resorts not more expensive, and less all-inclusivey? Just come back from Cancun, and can't imagine the price and the inclusive will match the low price of Mexico...

My thoughts echo Smid's.

Although I would prefer Florida over Mexico, you will probably find Mexico easier in terms of managing budget. You can get an AI there easily and therefore you know what you're spending. Florida will likely be room only.

Riviera Maya is nice, down by Tulum, a lot more laid back and less in your face than Cancun area.

Still prefer Florida though.

Playa Del Carmen is good too, with choice of non all inclusive, with a real town to go to ($2-3 a beer, $4 a coke, $5-6 food) or AI in the edges with options to wander into town...

You could consider hiring a villa in the Keys and eat in some of the time as it can be quite expensive eating out. The supermarket prices are cheaper than at home. We did this last year and had a great holiday. We also went to Cancun last December and can recommend Secrets The Vine ( Adults only, all inclusive, with lots of wine tasting.)
