So after making my way up from Florida I arrived into T4 trying to find the UC check in area. I knew it had moved from when I last here a couple of months ago, but it took some finding -tucked away in the sky priority zone at the far end of T4 and unhelpfully around a corner! n(

With the help of a couple of staff I presented myself at the UC desk to be met by the most unfriendly agent I have come across at JFK, I had a poor experience the last time when passing through JFK n( ...he then struggled to check me in for my onward Little Red flight which was on a separate ticket but never usually presents a problem.

Fifteen minutes of tapping fingers on the desk (not one apology or explanation what the problem was) I was passed back my two boarding passes and not wished a great fight, sorry for the wait or even......where to go next to find security... n( A really poor start, if I had only known this would set the scene for this flight!

Anyway I found my way quite easily and ended up in the sky priority line which really wasn't priority as it joined up with the general queue....thankfully security was light and I was through rather quickly.

Into the Clubhouse where I had a haircut and then had the pleasure of meeting up with joeyc and we sat and chatted, had several drinks and some items from the tapas menu. Service was good and friendly, though I did miss a couple of my favourite servers who were on a day-off :#

Boarding was called at 1800 and I left on the first call. I was welcomed at the aircraft door with a friendly smile and directed to my seat. I like 10A as it allows a better view out of the window and you are not facing anyone.

A menu, amenity kit, headset and a bottle of water were already in the seat area. The CSS came along and offered a sleep suit followed by a glass of champagne and finally newspapers.

We pushed off stand at 1833 and performed a slow taxi until take-off at 1910. Whilst taxing, the CC member looking at my section in UC came along and welcomed me back, was friendly and took the drink and menu orders - he was by far the most friendly CC on the flight so I was lucky oo)

After take off hot towels were offered, soon followed by my pre-ordered G&T which was lovely along with some crisps. These east-coast night flights are difficult I am sure for the crew as some people were wanting their beds to be made up, they were trying to serve drinks and on this flight the Vera on demand was not playing game....so had to be reset which took over an hour. Not one apology was offered which seemed odd :0

Once it did get going, having used Vera touch on my recent flights you realise how clunky Vera on demand is...... n(

The guy before me had ordered beef and so had I, so it was interestingly to see the CC member come back to the guy in front and say they had run out and could he choose something else... :w

Tables were finally laid for dinner at 2015 and the menu was:

Tomato and leek soup or Salmon rillettes

Fillet of beef - Chive mash, carrots and broccoli
Seared Salmon - rice, Kai-lan and Soy glaze
Vegetable ravioli

Chocolate fondant or cheese plate

(Sorry the photos are a little dark....the lights were out by the time the food arrived)

Choosing a mug of hot chocolate to round things off, I then made a quick visit to the bar to pick up a night-cap and the bar was busy. I then went back to my seat, made up my bed and settled down for three hours.

I was woken by the sound of knives on plates and realised it was after 5am and the crew were well into the breakfast service. Choosing to eat in revivals I just opted for coffee and juice which were topped up too.

The FSM seemed rather lazy, didn't engage with anyone in UC and didn't help in any aspect of the service, he was just up front doing paperwork. The CSS was also not the best, he looked really tired before we even left JFK and was not at all inspiring. My CC score would be worse if it was not for the guy looking after my section, who was clearly doing all he could.

No holding today and we touched down at 0635 after the cabin was secured and a final round of hot towels.

When we reached the gate the captain announced he could not let us leave the aircraft just yet as the police needed to come on board, he reassured us that it was nothing to worry about. The Police did come on briefly and then left, allowing us to disembark and they were all stood in the airbridge- so can only assume the they came on, identified someone and then waited for them to leave the aircraft......

This delayed the arrival at the UK border by around 15mins. I was quickly processed and found myself in revivals taking the last shower cubicle at 0710.

Revivals was as good as ever- a refreshing shower, a good breakfast and friendly service. Just what was needed.

Sadly, not the greatest VS flight I have been on- what seemed bar one exception, a poor FSM and CSS with a crew who just didn't promote the best we know they can and often do.

Thanks for the TR Jon and sorry to read, after a run of excellent service records through other TRs, that standards slipped back on this occasion. It also goes to show that it's the crew on the ground and in the air that make the difference when they're switched on and doing their job properly. It sounds as though on this occasion they were a bit lazy and indifferent which doesn't make for a positive experience.

At least the CH and the Revivals lounge shone through so it wasn't all bad eh?

Jon

Oh Dear……… your experience not one that senior VS Managers would be pleased to hear v( v(

The not -so welcome at JFK will leave a lasting impression on passengers and the fact you are a frequent flyer in no way masks the negativity of the check in experience.

As for the on board service, your account demonstrates the poor leadership of the FSM and CSS. Having to wait for nearly two hours for food shows a serious leadership malfunction if you ask me. Good show on the CC who looked after you and Mr Kreeger should be grateful that CC has kept your custom.

Thanks for an interesting TR - at least on this occasion Joey was not able to get a fellow V Flyer too drunk ):

Thanks Buns and Bretty.

Based on this experience and if I didn't know better....why would you fly VS again. That said, the CH and revivals along one single CC member I came into contact with helped saved the day and I like to think it was a blip.... :w

I have shared my experience with Mr Kreeger so let's see what response comes back. Another highlight was meeting Joey so not all lost!!

VS can and usually do better than this.

I too like Revivals.
I tend to go through arrivals, and go for a shower and breakfast in Revivals, even though I usually have a connection on to EDI, so probably am supposed to stay airside, and follow connections.

I like to break the rules too.....usually have a LR connection to MAN but always visit revivals even though I am suppose to follow the signs to flight connections..... ):

All bad I hope Jon ,I'd be disappointed otherwise ,thanks for posting this TR ,a real shame that the service levels weren't there this time ,it's a good job you know they can and most of time do so much better .

If I'm on a flight that gets in when Revivals is open, I always use it before traipsing over to T1. There's nothing in the rule book that says you HAVE to use Flight Connections. Indeed there have been occasions in the past when it would have been quicker to by-pass it and head straight for T1, such were the crowds waiting to connect.

Revivals is a jewel. On the occasions when I have arrived from a long-haul overnight flight and it hasn't been available, I have really missed the opportunity to freshen up and have a decent meal before my flight home.

Well said HL, revivals is a jewel for sure. I always manage to have a shower, have a good breakfast and then head across to T1 with plenty of time to spare. It was over 30mins on Wednesday before boarding commenced.

I once went through flight connections and it took sooooooo long.

Happy World Gin Day by the way.....hope you are celebrating like I am!!!! :D

Thanks for your TR. I share your views on the new(ish) check in desks. Shame about both ground and cabin crew being sub-par. Thank goodness for the CHs snd Revivals.

Ps. Billy and Richard! Stop saying mean things about Joey. It's not a bad thing to try to get people drunk provided they are not on their way to operate heavy machinery, and of course, that you are not trying to have your evil way with them.

Cheers for putting this TR together Jon, it was great to meet you too.

I think that I had the same check-in guy as you - his computer was locking up so he kept switching desks without saying a word. The onus was definitely on me to start any conversation though.

I love the JFK CH staff (Yes, staff only.. I still lament the last CH's demise) - who doesn't want to be welcomed back with words like 'Hey superstar' and 'Great to see you, we were told you might be coming through today' - fantastic customer recognition for returning travellers. It was also really good of the CH manager to come and serve/speak to us at the bar .. really top notch service as always y) y)

It is a shame that the flight underwhelmed, unfortunately a frequent occurrence on a night flight - good to hear you managed to get some shuteye though. After the very generously poured drinks in the CH I was pretty much comatose for mine. :w

Yes, stop being mean to Joey :P

It's ok tinuks I have heard a lot worse and also seen a lot worse from the two of them... need I bring up the drunken Cartman impressions Billy and don't get me started on the day that Blacky came to Richmond... :o) :o)

Great TR, I always like that you put in pictures!

I feel the same about Vera on demand, very slow to respond also.

Great TR thanks and like Ultreen, I so enjoy the pics and must remember some in my next.
So many of us recently have struggled to find UC check-in at JFK. Why I wonder did they think it was a good idea to hide in round a corner in an area clearly signed "Delta"? Maybe the IT department was in charge?

Last time I was there a couple of months ago it was right in front of you as you walked in the very last left hand doors as you looked at the terminal , where is it now then ?

That's now carry-on only. If you have baggage to check, it's turn right and go as far as you can to the glass wall and just as you get there, you see a small sign that says Virgin Atlantic Upper Class. It's right at the end of the line of Delta check-in desks.
