I think you need to demonstrate procedures in order to increase the ETOPS limit from the delivery value, I know ANZ do this for their Auckland-LAX route and hence has a very large ETOPS allowance on their 777s.

Yes and no, the A330 is certified ETOPS 240 at delivery but I think Virgin are only certified to ETOPS 180 (240 is a lot more hoops). The 787 is the same.

180 is sufficient for all Virgin routes anyway, see 180 map.

FAA has certified the 787-9 as ETOPS 330. This was part of the deal with ANZ to deliver the aircraft ETOPS certified.

Sorry to link to The Mirror, but what on earth is a "Wander Wall"??? Do you get up, walk to wander wall, look at it, feel refreshed and go sit back down again?

Sounds like its some kind of vertically flat bar area with drinks, snacks etc.

I've also seen it will be in a special livery... No doubt the same as the original birthday girl, considering G-VFAB will be leaving the fleet in the next year or so.

I don't think it will be that extensive. My understanding is just that the lady on the front will have a glass of bubbles. The remainder of the livery will be the same.

Very interesting - so a bar area for PE customers, this would be amazing (as I can seldom if ever afford UC..!) and certainly make a massive point of difference.

Booking for the first passenger 787 passenger flight on October 28th is now available with plenty of availability. No rewards seats at the moment.

There were a couple of days ago. They've clearly been snapped up since the confirmation from VS!

I didn't see this posted (in one place) earlier, here is confirmation of the first 787 flights:

VS11/12 BOS from 28 Oct to 18 Dec daily ex Friday (still on A333) then daily from 19 Dec

VS21/22 IAD from 17 Dec to 22 Jan daily ex Fri and Sat (still on A333) then daily from 23 Jan

VS3/4 JFK daily from 28 Feb

Seating to be 30 in Upper, 21 in Premium and 174 in Economy compared to 33 /48 / 185 on the A333 and 45 / 38 / 233 on the A346s that they'll ultimately replace, and more on the 747s if they replace those too. I've been forecasting for a while, but say bye bye to reward seats in the front cabins!

787 config will be 31/35/198 (also 346's only have 225 seats in Y)

Still... The 787-9 will represent a significant capacity drop over the 346/747 fleets it's replacing.

The reduction in Y is probably "a good thing" - our last two trips to St Lucia & Antigua had full UC & PE, but Y was under half full....

I guess VS have 2 distinct markets; LHR and then the B&S from LGW/MAN/GLA. Foe the B&S routes, the 747 is probably "too big" outside Orlando, and even then only at peak holiday times.

Air NZ are the launch customer I believe.

As for the first VS 787 - it is currently being put together so not ready to fly just yet!

Hi all,

I've been following this thread and various news articles but can't seem to find exactly what I am looking for. I know the dates for BOS have been publicly confirmed and that IAD, JFK and EWR would follow.

While BOS is a little far fetched, and although IAD and JFK are somewhat more acceptable for an opportunity like this, does anyone know, even vaguely, when EWR will begin service of the 787?

Interesting video showing what kind of testing takes place. Did you see the glow from the heat on the wheels? Cool y)

The amount of heat energy stored in those brakes is tremendous, I was most impressed that they ground the brakes to worn and used fusible plugs in the tyres to stop them exploding.

Here's what happens when a test goes wrong, this is an A340-600 the commentary of the crew is interesting trying to convince everybody there's nothing wrong so it passes the test

At present the EWR date is scheduled for 28/02/2015

Correction sorry that's JFK but it's all loaded into the VS booking system as just did a dummy booking and it shows aircraft as 787-9 but it could change depending on a number of different factors
