Right, July 25th was my 40th birthday. I was flying Narita to Heathrow and had booked economy. Arrived at the airport and thought sod it, let's pay the upgrade cost 200,000 yen (maybe 1600 quid). Anyway, they noticed it was my 40th and suddenly everyone was saying "Happy Birthday", etc. Got to the Narita Clubhouse and was again greeted at the door with a chorus of "Happy Birthday's". They also provided me with a dessert with "Happy Birthday" written all over. During the flight was presented with a complimentary bottle of wine by the FSM.
Fast forward to August 18 and my return to Tokyo. Was dreading a return to economy so inquired at the payment desk how much it would be to up again and was quoted "1600". After picking myself off the floor, opted for premium economy at around 350. However, while telling the lady about my outward leg, she piped up that I had accumulated about 18,000 FFP and could get an upgrade to upper for 260 quid or thereabouts. Was ecstatic. After quickly ditching the folks and shooting up the elevator, I made my way to the clubhouse for a first visit.
Blimey, talk about a kid in a candy store. As I had read on other posts, I made a beeline for the spa and asked about the facial, they said they were full but would put me on standby.
I went over and ordered breakfast and just as my bacon and eggs arrived, I was tannoyed for my facial. I felt so bad to see food wasted but they insisted I went and that they would sort me a new breakfast when I returned. Sure enough, it was. The barman did me a nice cocktail of his own design and I had a few minutes swinging in the pod chair.
The flight back to Japan was pretty full with just one or two seats empty in UC. I think I slept through most of the flight. The Chiken Katsu was lovely and I had two lamb kebabs from the graze menu.
So, a lovely 40th and a new convert to UC. I felt very satisfied with all aspects of the trip and the effort they made for me. I shall look forward to my next UC trip later in the year.
