Surely the way to look at is as that "a lot of people on here are SAVING a lot of money" :o)

The Ex-EU fare trick can SAVE many many thousands on BA F class tickets too!

I really need to work out how to do this as we're travelling to SFO in mid-late May next year and a cheap Z ticket would be marvellous ;) Bretty, enjoy! It's a fantastic city, so much to see and great food, too! Probably my favourite destination in the US.

Edit: Just checked from DUB and oh my goodness! What a difference. Hmmn... May is looking even more interesting ;)

It's a ridiculous saving isn't it? That's why I couldn't resist.

I've just noticed that my payment for this trip, booked via Expedia, has been attributed to VS on my Amex account, with an extra few quid charged separately by Expedia, possibly transaction fee. So I'll be keen to see if I get my 4 miles per £ as the transaction has been processed by VS. I'll let you know next month.

Now here's something interesting for you to consider when checking fares. I've been idly looking at fares for a trip I want to take in the spring and all the options at the moment are much of a muchness but in any case, I can't commit to a definite date at this time but it's no harm to look.

Now, many of you will know that I have used the ex-AMS trick on a couple of occasions and it's usually an option I will consider when researching fares. However many of you have talked about ex-DUB fares and so I looked at the SFO options using the dates that Bretty posted in the itinerary forum. My default Expedia domain is the Irish one and while this has offered many of the ex-AMS fares at a time when the UK site didn't, on this occasion the ex-DUB wasn't that much cheaper than, for example the BA site and just marginally than the VS offering from LHR. OK, over to the ex-AMS offering and yes, the mega-savings were there. Out of curiosity I changed over to the .co.uk domain, and wow!! The ex-DUB-SFO flights were unbelievably cheap! It's years since I spent so little on the SFO route. Even when converted to Euros, it was still coming out €600 cheaper than the ex-AMS fare for me! :0 :0

Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to book such a fare at the moment but it's worth noting and I'm wondering if I'll get kicked off the UK site if I try to book it. Time will tell.

I guess the way to tell HL is if you can log in to your Expedia account via the UK site and it still keep you on the UK site showing prices in £ sterling. But that's amazing I think and shows it's worth shopping around.

Oh it does but I'm wondering if it would boot me off when it comes to the payment page. However, as the original ex-AMS fares were only available on the Irish domain perhaps I will be lucky when I want to book ex-DUB from the UK site.

Thanks MoJoJo, I've booked the Omni. Whilst I appreciate that the Fairmont chain is excellent, their prices are above what I'm willing to pay and consider good value for a hotel.

Need a bit of help. I posted a few days ago about my inability to find many flight options, and got responses saying that I could find them down the list etc, but I am still at a loss.

I have tried expedia.co.uk and expedia.com, both signed in my account and as a visitor, and if I put a return DUB-SFO (11/6-25/6) in I get two options only at c£1500 on Virgin. If I select either I don't get any extra flight options. Like others here I am looking to do the DUB-LHR leg the day before and get the LON-DUB leg from LGW.

So what on earth am I doing wrong? I did find a site called http://www.onetwotrip.com which did give me more options although I couldn't quite pair up the flights I wanted.

BA (which is the carrier used on the LON-DUB flights in the ex-EU pairings) do not fly LGW-DUB. That's the province of EI. Try using LCY for the LON-DUB route

Hi Stagsfan,
This is what I see when I check flights to SFO ex-DUB on the dates you mention:

Expedia1.jpg

Expedia2.jpg

Make sure you've selected Virgin Atlantic as your preferred airline. The flights commencing 21:00, 19:10, 16:00 and so on all arrive in SFO the next day, so you have an overnight layover in LHR. If you want to arrive in SFO on 11th June, just select 10th as your start date. When it comes to booking the return you'll be presented with options of arrival in DUB. Bearing in mind the SFO flight arrives in London the next day, you can book the connection to DUB (the flight you don't take) on the same day or for the day after, which is what I did to avoid any issues with having bags checked through to DUB as I'll have an overnight in London.

Hope that helps.

Bretty - feel a fool now. Found out that my mistake was that I was selecting Virgin Atlantic after doing the search, which gave me just a couple of flights. By filtering before the search I get what you have shown.

Thanks for helping.

Pleasure. Always happy to help a fellow v-flyer to both spend and save! How many have booked / are booking on the back of this thread I wonder?

It's funny, to me, because Washington, D.C. was next on my hit list. I'd started compiling a list of potential hotels and everything. SFO was an impulse, although on my list of places. Looks like IAD goes onto the back burner now :w :w
