I will probably take your advise and do it over the phone with Vs, I am doing two flights with Virgin America , I take it they can do that for me too?

I don't know about the Virgin America flights.

But Bretty's Expedia suggestion sounds better than mine, as it looks like they are giving even more miles for the booking (6 per £)!

I did use Expedia UK. Perhaps gfonk you just got unlucky. I was really pleased with the prices quoted, but I don't suppose it's always a reliable choice.

I think the credit card fee is a percentage, plus if you have the Amex you get miles on that. But credit card charges are becoming standard practice nowadays. Although my business is different and on a way smaller scale, I add on credit charges to clients using them, otherwise the transaction fees I get charged would reduce my profit margins. Of course an alternative is to price things to include the charges as standard rather than additional.

Question on the AMS trick. Would I be able to do the following
Positing Flight from London to Dublin - Hand Luggage/Minimal Luggage
Dublin to London - Same as above, ideally night before so can get back home
London to US/WI - Usual luggage (i.e. Lots!)
Don't fancy lugging 6 suitcases over to Dublin for the night!

I believe some people have done that.

You can also store luggage at LHR to collect.

Yes as Honey Lamb told me, you can store luggage at LHR

I've been messing with this all bloody day and am getting pretty frustrated.

How can I do this starting in the US?

expedia.com won't allow multi-city trips and expedia.co.uk won't even calculate MCO-MAN-DUB.

Or I just SOL if I want to fly VS UC and save some shekels?

It may not work for ex-US fares in the same way as it does for ex-EU.

The European airline market is different from the US one with more carriers in Europe wanting business to start at their hubs than there are in the states.

I thought I would apply the same principle, fly from a non Virgin Airport TO a Virgin hub to start your flight.

Searching FLL-MAN which seems to route you via MIA and JFK gives similar Upper Class fares to doing DUB-MIA/MCO from our end.

The key principle seems to be that your journey ORIGINATES from an airport other than where the VS flight starts.

Of course if I have just genuinely stumbled on the reverse of the DUB trick, please try not to tell the entire US population!!

I don't think it applies in reverse order. The principle of the ex-EU flights is that BA and VS are trying to attract passengers from their national carriers to the US (and some other ex-LHR destinations) by offering a significantly lower fare which includes carriage from an EU airport to LHR.
