Rome Hotels

Hi - visiting Rome for the first time in September. Can anyone recommend a good hotel, please? Would like something 4/5 star with good dining options. I don't know whether it is best to be right in the city centre or out of town a bit. We are only going for 4 days! Also would appreciate recommendations for things to see apart from the usual tourist circuit!

I can recommend the Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts. Its outside of the city centre but has a free shuttle bus to take you to the centre a few times a day.

I would book an imperial room which will give you access to the Imperial Club, with complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, evening snacks and refreshments including a free bar in the evening and prosecco all day. Also free access to the Cavalieri Grand Spa Club.

It has a great indoor and outdoor swimming pool. The food was amazing and the service second to none.

There is no availability on same dates in September, but at the beginning of September Imperial rooms are showing a price of £234 a night. When searching tick the flexible date box to get the best price.

MrsPJH would second this opinion of the service as she and my daughter were given access to the Imperial Lounge when the other standard Diamond privilege facilities were not available back in 2008 or so. That said it was effectively "free", and I understand that the hotel policies are now such that HHonors status have no other privileges at the property (in common with some other WA branded properties).

Thank you Daffodil and PJH. I have booked the Rome Cavalieri - Imperial Room - although the Rome view rooms were fully booked! With a bit of flexibility, managed to get a rate of c. £246 per night so am very pleased! Hotel looks gorgeous so am really looking forward to our stay there.

Beware though that the Cavalieri is a long way away from the sites, so much so that they provide a shuttle bus to take you in and out of the city. For example, if you were to walk from there to the Colosseum it would take 1 1/2 hrs each way:

While it's a lovely hotel, if you like being in the city and enjoying it by strolling around, everything you do will require transport. No strolling the maze of streets to find a spot to eat without knowing where to point a taxi at! Since you're there for three nights, why not be central?

For a hotel with similar style and amenity (although no pool) try the Grand Hotel Minerve: http://www.grandhoteldelaminerve.com/. It's beautiful, has an amazing rooftop bar, and it's smack bang in the middle of the city, the Pantheon is literally across the road. I've stayed there a few times and love it, you walk to everything, the Piazza Navona, Campo de Fiori, the Trevi Fountain, Via Condotti, Palazzo Pamphili Doria etc. are all on your doorstep.

At a more budget level for anyone visiting take a look at the Hotel Campo de Fiori: http://www.grandhoteldelaminerve.com/. Another wonderful place at much lower cost and equally well placed, especially for the restaurants of Travastere.

Slinky - this hotel looks lovely too! However, I have already booked the Cavalieri so too late to change as am on special non-refundable rate! Will bear this in mind if we decide to go again! Thanks for your help.

Just back from Rome and our stay at the Cavalieri. Thanks so much, Daffodil and PJH, for recommending this hotel. It was really lovely - in fact I can find no fault with it at all! Room was great and we didn't even mind having an 'antenna' view as we got the sun in the afternoon/evening which I prefer, rather than in the morning. OH has gold Hilton status, so we got free wifi and lounger/towel use which was a bonus. Imperial Club offerings great too and I managed to resist the temptation of Prosecco for breakfast! Will definitely be recommending this Hotel to others.

Did you find the location of the hotel manageable?

I actually preferred the location of the Hotel, rather than being in the city centre. The views over Rome and the Vatican were fantastic, and as the Hotel provided a regular shuttlebus, we were able to get into town quickly and easily. We had no trouble finding room on the bus on any of the 4 occasions we used it. The hotel grounds, although not that extensive, were quite large enough for a stroll around. We ate out in the nearby town (not sure of the name) a couple of times and this was within easy walking distance (about 10-15 mins). Of course, if you like a lot of night life, then the Hotel probably would not be to your taste!

Turquoise, I'm so pleased you enjoyed both Rome and the Cavalieri. It would be by first choice of hotel again if I ever revisit Rome.

Double it.

Actually there are quite a few monastic places to stay in Rome (not surprisingly) and you do not have to attend mass every day to stay in them. Check out monasterystays-dot-com!
