I am looking at booking an internal flight, one way, with AA and various types of Econ ticket are available. Could someone please advise me which is the best type to book, ie do I prebook luggage etc.

Thank you.

Luggage - always best to pre book as cheaper than doing it at the airport

As to the ticket depends if you want inflexible and cheap or changeable and expensive

If your plans are fixed then go for cheap if you think they may change then go for the flexible

For short hops with many of the US airlines always check out the business class fare. By the time you paid for you economy ticket and added a bag or two, it's sometimes just a few dollars more.

Business class usually gives priority boarding, and a bigger seat as well as a very good baggage allowance ( but remember it doesn't include any lounge access )

I assume David meant check First Class, as there is generally not Business Class on internal flights - it's just Economy (Coach / Main Cabin) or First.

To prove Davids' point, I just ran a search on AA.com for a one way JFK-MCO flight in early January. Interesting results...

"Choice" fare - $232 (no baggage included)
"Choice Essential" fare - $261 (1 checked bag & group 1 boarding included)
"Choice Plus" fare - $312 (1 checked bag, group 1 boarding & no change fee)
"First" fare - $351 (3 checked bags, priority access & no change fee)

The Choice Plus & First fares also include premium beverages (alcohol), so at least a saving of $5 per drink there. First fare also gets you priority security screening, which can save you a lot of time. NB: The changes on these tickets are same day changes only. If you want fully flexible / refundable then the fares start at $681 for the same flight. Ouch.

(its the added bags that get you $25 for the 1st, $35 for the 2nd and $150 for the third if you are flying economy)

I admit I did not look at the baggage fees - but those charges make the First class ticket a no-brainer if you've got 3 bags. Now I see why people in the USA try to carry everything and the kitchen sink onboard.
