I've asked this question over at FT but wondered if any V-Flyers have any ideas...

I'm flying from HKG to LAX this month (via ICN) on Asiana in Business. I'm not a member of any other FFP than FC but would like to make the best use of the miles I'll earn on the flight. I'm wondering whether joining a Star Alliance programme would help at least get the miles into Hilton HHonors or something similar.

Anyone had any experience with this tightrope walk of miles transfers?!

Thanks!

Oli

Thanks. Yes in a sense. I am pretty sure I can't do some odd transfer from Asiana to, say, NZ and then to VS, so I'm trying to see another route - perhaps NZ to Hilton then to VS - if that's even possible (can you transfer miles to a Hilton account from an FFP or is it only the one way?). I know people sometimes come up with these clever jumps but not sure how!

Yes so I see. It was more trying to make use of miles on an airline I don't really have much contact with - if I can get them out of that system then I can try and utilise them a bit better rather than them sitting there for 12 months then falling off!

VS miles only expire 3 years after the last date of activity.

The 'swap' website is points.com but I know it doesn't include all airline programmes and you have to do the moves from programme to programme yourself. (There may be other websites but that's the one I've heard of)

And some programmes require you to have earned real points before they accept external miles or need you to have an account for a certain period or to exchange a minimum number of miles
