I can not find a clear answer on the VS website and expect it has been asked many times before but...

If I have say, 55,000 FC miles in my account and the OH has 25,000 in theirs, is it possible to use the combined total for return G upgrades?

I am assuming not from what I am reading but it is not clear if the rules on combining are for rewards flights rather than rewards upgrades, or both.

Anyone in the know, please speak up :)

You can in two ways

1. Is to 'gift' or 'transfer' the miles from one account into another. BUT this costs £££

2. You can use miles from the two accounts but only if the miles in both accounts can 'pay' for a sector.

So if you wanted to use those 80,000 miles for a G to say NYC you would need to have 40k in both accounts.

By the looks of this page, it seems the OP would be able to do what they were looking to do, seeing as one leg would be paid in full by the OH's account. Unless I'm reading that wrong.

It's also been my experience that I can take miles from my OH account provided that at least one segment (a full one way upgrade or one segment of a R/T) should qualify.

If looking to use a partner's miles Tonty is right in that each account must have enough miles to cover the sectors being spent on. So if you're looking at M to G upgrades with each sector costing 20,000 miles then Maximus could do it if they each had 40K miles in their accounts or if one had 20K and the other 60K. So that 5K miles needs to be moved across as a transfer (cost £52.50) or buy 5K miles (cost £90). What you can't do is combine miles from each account to make up a shortfall in the miles needed to purchase a sector, hence the miles either have to be transferred or more earned / purchased.

Sounds exciting Maximus, you planning another trip mate?

What they said :) Also, you can use your OH's miles as long a they OK it over the phone with the FC staff. We did that back in August and now I can use my husband's miles whenever I book without needing him to allow it, I just have to answer some simple security questions.

For our last trip, we needed 100,000 miles for the upgrade. I had circa 83,000 and husband had circa 33,000. Each sector was 25,000 miles per person, so we used 75,000 from my account and 25,000 from his. Had either of us had a shortfall of miles under the amount needed for a sector, we would have had to pay to transfer miles between our accounts (or do a miles booster retroactively for a previously flown flight!)

Where are you looking at flying to?

Thanks all- the 60 K / 20 K miles split sounds ideal. But having just checked our accounts a 40 k / 40 k split will be OK after all, I was surprised to see the miles had built up more than I had expected y)

So to make someone an "authorised user" of each others accounts we just have to call Customer Services?

Bretty- I am always planning something! I was tentatively considering a Washington or Miami trip in early 2016. But then again NYC is always on my radar too :)

Sounds good, and you sound like me! Yes you just have to phone FC and OH needs to give verbal consent for you to use his account and they'll make a note to link them, and then Bob's your uncle.

Spot on; FC are always really helpful with this.
