Connecting at EWR

Would like anyone's thoughts on the feasability of this connection:

Arrive EWR from YYC @ 1835 on Air Canada, connecting to VS2 scheduled departure 2045. I know there is a change of terminal required (which is no problem) but wondered; do you still have to clear immigration for Canada-US flights like you do for international arrivals, or is it treated like a domestic US flight ? Am I pushing it with the 2hr10mins connection time ? Cheers !

On visiting EWR at the end of November I can tell you that the monorail between the Terminals is still running a reduced service (still going 1 yr on). This meant nearly a 20 minute transfer between the terminals as the are only running on one set of rails.

Not sure having never actually connected through EWR how long the rest of the process takes.

I would imagine as each is a soveriegn country then yes, this will be your first landing on USA soil, you will still go through Customs and Immigration, the same way as you have to crossing the boarder by car.

Paul- when were you in EWR? I connected from B(VS) to C(CO) in about 5 minutes on November 9th when I returned from the UK. I had a scheduled 1 hour 50 minute connection and I made it with plenty of time to spare. VS aircraft to gate 101C in about 35 minutes total. That includes the time it took to get through immigration, customs, baggage claim, and through security at Terminal C. I think I spent maybe 5 minutes on the monorail.

Just curious though- who are you booking your ticket through? And does VS have ticketing and baggage agreements with AC? Check these before you book. If Virgin doesn't have agreements with AC and you miss the Virgin flight for some reason, VS may not be required to put you on a later flight, if your tickets are on AC stock.

I remember reading on airliners.net a few months ago about an individual that booked his own interline reservations, with a UA-VS connection. UA failed to properly notify VS of the passenger, as the UA flight was running late- which resulted in him missing the VS flight, and quite a bit of ticketing mess since his tickets were under UA control and VS couldn't use them. Just make sure that whenever you're booking interline travel it is with airlines that work well together.

I suspect that you will clear immigration into the US on the Canadian side and arrive as a domestic flight.

Yes, you'll clear US customs as you depart from YYC - so you'll just be walking through EWR as if you'd arrived from a US domestic flight.

2hr 10mins in EWR for a Canadian Arrival > Int'l Departure is plenty.


VS will interline bags from Air Canada. I do this a bit - the only problem with it is INTO the US from the UK (and then onto Canada) due to the customs pickup/drop off problem - no probs Canada-US-UK.

Ah yes, I remember reading that too. But don't worry Nitrox, I doubt you will have any of the same problems. Clearing immigrations in the departing country really saves time, I've done it when coming back from Bermuda. You just get off the plane and go.
