I think I'm getting grumpier...

Ok, in an attempt at self therapy, I wanted to bounce this off you guys (half grinning).

I'm finding that I'm getting unfeasibly annoyed at certain phrases I keep hearing (sticks out tongue)...

"...me personally..." - I mean, talk about redundancy of wording.

"...the other alternative..." - when a first alternative hasn't been offered...

Is it just me:-)

"All I can do is apologise..."

"It's your responsibility to choose the right ticket for your journey..." (Railway based)

"Should of",
"Gotta" and "gonna" in written communication that isn't quoting a conversation,
"Due to today's inclement weather",
"Irregardless of the facts...."

I could go on but I forgot to bring my blood pressure tablets with me tonight.

Should of, could of, would of for me too. Possibly my biggest pet hate.

It's just one of them things/days...

When people use "myself" unnecessarily and incorrectly...

And don't get me started on the (mis)use of apostrophes...

The use of the word "like" as punctuation;

"<insert name of train company> would like to apologise for..." - recorded announcement, I mean, it says something when even apologies are now automated...

I do, and was asked when taking a management role to discuss the "focals" with my immediate reports.

- "What is a focal?" I asked my boss,
- "Pay rise" was his reply,
- "Why is it called a focal?" I asked,
- "I have no idea" was his reply.

I saw this as a learning experience, grew and moved on...

But lord knows I have to use it sometimes otherwise my text communications look like letters and the phone companies can craftily charge for a long text!

Unfortunately Whiterose, many people on social media can't spell or even do simple arithmetic; it annoys me. I'm not perfect but mostly I'll go back and correct my own spelling or grammar errors. Half the problem for me is iPads and phones etc all have predictive text and when typing at speed mistakes are easily missed.

My pet hate is spelling mistakes. I read and write a lot of medical reports, the errors I see from medical professionals is so frustrating. It bugs me even more if one of my reports is sent out with spelling errors that neither I nor my PA picked up. It's the perfectionist in me.

Another is misused quotation marks. I was taught to use single quotation marks when quoting text, double when quoting speech.

Agree with most of these bugbears. Misusing "myself" is a biggy for me. As is people who say the letter H as "haytch" instead of "aitch", annoys me more than it has any reason to.

Loads of things annoy me - in fact my world has a constant pink tinge because I seem to see red about almost everything these day. Just call me the Queen of the Grumps! )

My pet hates are:

the 'would of, could of, could of, should of must of', referred to earlier and bad and all as it is in speech it drives me to distraction to see it written down!

Phrases like "At the end of the day" On one radio news programme someone began/ended every single sentence with that phrase. It was one of those programmes where they read out listeners comments. The broadcaster said they had none about the topic but everyone commented about his use of this phrase!

Others include:

A new beginning - every beginning is new!

At this moment in time - whatever happened to "right now"?

I, myself, personally

"He has went" instead of "he has gone"

"He have" instead of "He has" (This is a Cork city thing ) )

I also despair of spelling and like Bretty find them so frustrating! Having said that I had a classic the other day. Our parish priest has the title of Monsignor and the other day I received this email on the parish laptop in which a highly educated lady asked me to pass some thing on to "mon senior" I'm still chuckling about it!

Incorrect use of - there, their, they're.

Facebook status updates - they are mostly "hey look at me". I deactivated my account (only had it to stay in touch with my son). Really, why post things like 'more bad news tonight' and then say nothing to quantify it......'feeling so ill' clearly not so ill you can't update your status........'so busy'.......get a life people and don't broadcast every sniff.

Which reminds me of a similar annoyance that frequently occurs on my daily commute.

A small provincial town station, somewhere in the South-East of England that has far more passengers using it than it was ever built to accommodate.
-- People who reach the top of the stairs leading to a rather narrow London bound platform, and stop dead gazing vacantly at the departure board blocking the way for those still on the way up - grrr!

Call centre agents who, after a protractet, futil and highly frustrating conversation, say "is there anything else I can help you with" - the strong implication that they have actually helped me in the first place sends me to the drinks cabinet!

my most annoying bug bear is hearing politicians on the radio. They simply give a media trained answer and dont actually answer the question. Even if they are asked a closed question they still give an answer that didnt even start with a YES or NO.
Its soooo boring!!! ][|) ][|) I love it when the radio presenters are brave enough to say "for the third time of asking" and then finish with..."so you didnt ever get round to answering the question, NEXT" lol

I hate the latest 'in' word - robust but again the Politian's seem to love it :w

Another annoyance. When asked by a server how they can help, the reply comes back "can I get a coffee & a bun" and of course there is no please or thank you added.

I think we need to do some streamlining of the critical pathways in this thread really and show some blue sky, put if the box thinking for how we can all be more proactive!!

Corporate words and jargon annoy me a lot.

On the general point of annoyances, I have to add that in my 29th year I have had enough of Christmas, I hard the whole thing from start to finish and quite frankly I would rather go to sleep for a week!!!

Oh and lastly as someone who works for a Train Company I agree with the "inclement weather" comment too!!!
