Just been looking at fare codes and options. In the toolbox it says an Economy U fare code is not upgradeable however the VS website lists U as being able to upgrade http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/gb/en/fl ... ights.html

Given that an M is upgradeable, presumably a U is too.

It's not that long ago that L was the lowest upgradeable bucket though, so maybe the toolbox just needs updating.

Remember that Corporate Tickets have their own set of rules.

A corporate 'H' might very well have different rules from a VS direct booking 'H' just as a VS 'H' is different from a DL 'H' even if plane is the same!

Yep... I know, checked with FC today although surprised they didn't pick up on the U option. Anyway, what will be will be, at least I'm not flying with a US carrier in EC!

Mojojo - Check at the check-in desk. My last flight back (Sunday) was an H and it was both upgradeable and changeable no fee, just any fare difference.
Not sure if VS have change the codes. It always used to a S fare bucket for me when I flew PE.

Thanks, will give it a go although the fare difference will be quite substantial!

for a ticket booked via travel agent it's only W, Y and B that are upgradeable

i came a cropper a few weeks ago when i asked company TA to book me an M so that i could use miles to upgrade to UC at check-in

but VS would not allow it at check-in, only 'upgrade' option was to pay what seemed like full cost of PE or UC ticket, effectively my M was worth £0 even though company paid more than a lowest cost PE for it

in the words of FC...

Having checked your below booking reference I am able to confirm that you are travelling on what we call a nett fare. These are non-published ticket types such as discounted, corporate, travel agent or tour operator fares and can only be upgraded using miles in the following booking classes: W, Y and B.

Those NETT fares are also known as IT fares I believe ?| - What I have found, I may have just been lucky a few times, if you get your Corp Travel agent to change, after a booking in confirmed, it removes it from the IT fare basis and becomes something else that is usable with miles................

I am now a little confused. We do not use Flying Co, its 100% my flying club account and I can use my own miles and it was an H fare. It was defo. changeable as I changed the date of the return leg.
Have you tried calling VS and just asking if an upgrade is available for my booking of......??

Not yet, had intended too but back to back meetings today. It's in my list to call FC tomorrow.

At the end of the day though its day flights out and back to EWR and I still get CH access so it's not all that bad. I've managed to gets seats at the back in PE both legs, front row is blocked off, and it will do me good to check out PE for once... Or so I am telling myself :-/

yes, at the check-in they also called it an IT fare

please can you explain a bit about what your TA does to remove the IT status? it sounds very interesting, i'd like to try it on an upcoming trip!

Hey sungod - I just have changed the date a few times, normally the return leg. What I have found is that everything I change a return leg, or the outbound, I have the ability to upgrade with miles at the airport. I guess your could book and then change the outbound, just need to make sure they have seats before hand!!

Checked and the H is not upgradeable. So, I have gone back to see if corporate travel will change the fare to the U and use my miles to upgrade to the G's showing for out and inbound

Hmm,
That is interesting - Perhaps I just got lucky with Airport upgrades(???)
Should be defo. changeable tho as I have done that as well.

i'm wondering if VS has changed something in it's clunky IT systems, perhaps in the past they weren't able to apply the upgrade rules at check-in?

in the past i did several check-in upgrades EC/PE->UC for miles on TA tickets, and i'm sure most were not on the fare codes VS says are the only TA ones that can be upgraded (W, Y and B)

i had a search back for an old booking, it showed i upgraded to UC on PE fare codes H and S, these were TA tickets

i've also done it on EC tickets, not sure of the fare code but they will have been the company TA default of non-flexible lowest cost
