San Francisco restaurants

Hi all

Does anyone have recommendations for restaurants in SF? will be in the city during a cruise in April, ship will be in SF overnight so thought we would have dinner on shore, the cruise is part of a special celebration so price not an issue.

Thank you Slinky09, we are looking for s nice upmarket/romantic restaurant, we are on a cruise so will be staying on board ship in SF port, something within 20/30 minute taxi journey of the port would be good.

There is a very nice mainly fish restaurant in Ghiradelli square. When I took my mate there he said it looked like the titanic with all the brass and stained glass (but without the iceberg part). Called McCormick and Kuleto.

There are also nice ones in on Sausalito across the bay so you get some very nice views of the city both from there and on the ferry* but I can't remember the names!


* depending on what time you want to eat you might have to get the ferry there and a taxi back (ask via the GG bridge)

I highly recommend Piazza Pellegrini http://www.piazzapellegrini.com/

Although it's not an "upmarket" restaurant, the food wine & service is great.

Many thanks all for the recommendations. At the moment we're booked into a hotel near Union Square but this may change as (hopefully) more deals will come available.

For wonderful views of SF Bay, the Harbour and the Golden Gate Bridge you could try the Fog Harbor Fish House on a Pier 39. Had a brilliant fish meal there and also it's well recommended on Trip Advisor y)

Off the top of my head, I would highly recomened:

Atelier Crenn (possibly a bit far)
Quince (one of the staff recognised us from visiting a restaurant where they worked in Boston!)
Coi
Benu

There are so many fantastic places in San Francisco, we keep adding new places to our list every time we go.

Oh good choice on doing the evening tour - book as soon as you can though as it is very popular and not the secret private tour it used to be

It is well worth it. When I last did it we were allowed up into the hospital wing which was quite scary to see the limited facilities and hear of the basic treatments offered.

Crab House at Pier 39 - might be in a touristy distric but its mostly locals who go there, chowder is fantastic also the seafood/crab platter.
If your landing from a cruise get to a taxi asap as it tends to be a free for all when everyone gets off the ship at the same time. Speak with a member of the crew as they may be able to order you a taxi before you land.

If you find yourselves aronf Fisherman's Wharf, drop into Jack's Cannery Bar (2801 Leavenworth Street) for a beer; there are, usally, close on sixty on tap.

You could always try The Cavalier - a "British" restaurant

It's actually really good and very hard to get into.

It's a sister restaurant to a favorite of mine, Marlowe, which has moved into the space that Coco500 used to occupy after the retirement of the owner of that place. Love the spot, quite convenient. AQ on Mission is also great, prix fixe but not unreasonable at 65 bucks, fabulous drinks and very cali cuisine.

A new place in the Presidio that I highly recommend is The Commissary. Seriously good food, a variety of different seating options from the nice standard and romantic room to the bar all around the kitchen area where you get to watch the chefs prepare the food. A lot of fun, that is. Especially when the pastry chef is a good friend - that's the obligatory disclaimer. The setting is stunning out there. Grab a cab and walk around the Presidio park area, there are places to have drinks and look at the Bridge (you're basically below the Golden Gate Bridge in that area), then head for dinner.

When we were in San Francisco last year we went for a nice steak at Harris' Restsurant which was very nice. I can recommend the 49er cut and the baked Alaska

As we are only there for two nights and the Alcatraz night tour will be one of those we'll probably aim for something from Pier 39 before we go (mid afternoon - just in case it's a bit choppy) so that leaves us with our evening of arrival to sort - departure will be the Club House as we're on VS042 ):

Thank you all for SF restaurant recommendations. At the moment I have decided on Gary Danko restaurant (bookings not accepted until 2 months before date required) for SF, have also booked Blue River Café in Vancouver.
