I should get vouchers on my Amex Black later this year.
As I understand it they will entitle upgrade to PE from Economy.
In the past I have found the cheapest PE ticket to be much the same as an upgradable Economy so it seems pointless.
Am I missing something?

With these vouchers you spend miles on an economy ticket and you are then bumped up in to PE. You still have to pay the fees and surcharges. There is no cash element to the fare itself.

There has to be PE award space available to book.

The vouchers can also be combined with the current economy award flight sale.

As mentioned above these vouchers are great for when there is a miles sale, we have used them twice now.
We are off to DXB in May, 3 PE seats (2 x vouchers, 1 without voucher, just miles) for £1200. A bargain :)
We used them a couple of years ago to go to ORD, similar value.

These vouchers are well worth it, especially when there's a reward sale on.

I've just booked a break to New York with my granddaughter for June. Two economy rewards tickets cost just £495.72 + 52,000 miles. Then I upgraded to PE y)

An advertised fare for two with same dates etc is over £1800 and a miles+money fare £1739 +15k miles.

So yes I think these Amex vouchers are good value :)

+1.

It's the companion voucher that's rarely worth using, unless you need flexible tickets, as you have to buy an upgradable cash fare to use it plus pay the taxes and fees for your companion. It's often cheaper to buy two discounted tickets.

I really like these vouchers. Even without the reward seat sale, they are excellent value. We often use them for MCO, which works out about £700 + 85k miles for 2 PE seats.

Now if you can use them with a reward seat sale, they are excellent, and I think you would struggle to find a better use/value for your miles.

I currently have two PE seats reserved with Flying Club, flying out to Vegas and back from Orlando at the end of August. With the reward seat sale, its roughly 63K miles plus £796 taxes and fees. Revenue fares are currently £1127 each, so saving just short of £1500. Decent value I would say

I used our two last month, I couldn't wait for the reward seat sale, sadly, as there was limited availability on our route and dates--LHR to LAX in July. The cheapest two Y tickets would have set us back over £2,000 and PE almost £3,000. With this we spent 85,000 miles and about £850 for both of us which we felt was excellent value. No TP or miles earned, obviously, but the saving was worth it for us :)

If this sounds thick on my part please ignore it but I've had a drink !
To use these vouchers does the Y seat need to be a reward seat , one bought with cash or either ?
Also am I right in saying the voucher needs to be used no more than 12 months after being posted on ones account ?

Blacky, I believe there only needs to be availability in PE reward seat, and not in EC.

And a booking using them will need to be made within 12 months, but you don't need to have flown by then.

Yep, a Y rewards redemption not revenue, and as mrsw rightly says, there needs to be availability in PE not Y. You have 12 months to use the voucher meaning effectively you can travel up to 23 months after obtaining the voucher.

I've got 2 to use and think over the next few days will convince OH as there is a reward seat sale. Not that that's really important as we've accrued 200,000 miles so got plenty to burn! y) y)

I'm going to be honest here, and like blacky I've had a drink, I really don't get the Amex vouchers. It's all so confusing esp when you all talk about reward sales...

Ok simply

1. Spend a certain amount on the VS Amex credit card and you get an electronic voucher that can bump an economy miles ticket up into PE for no extra miles (assuming there are reward seats in PE but there does not have to be reward seats in Economy)

2. There is currently a reward seats sale on (i.e. less miles needed to buy a reward seat) which means you spend less miles on the economy part before the upgrade to PE.
