Could someone please refresh my memory on how to search for G fares in Flying Club .... I appear to be going around in circles

Just go through the process of making a "spend your miles" booking, and pick Upper Class.

If you see availability, that means there should be G bucket fares available (as full reward tickets and upgraded tickets are booked into the same bucket).

You don't need to go through with making the booking, of course, so some people call this a dummy booking.

As many people on v-flyer will testify, it's always worth phoning up Flying Club, as sometimes the actual availability doesn't match what is shown online.

One further trick others have found to be useful is to search each leg individually - i.e. make one-way dummy bookings - sometimes G fares show up on a one-way booking, but are absent from the same leg when searching for a r/t booking.
