Airlines drop under-performing routes and add new ones all the time. BA does it constantly and yes, while it's sad that VS has dropped a long-standing route like NRT, it's added ATL and DTW which better fit its (and its partner's) current business strategy.

Other airlines are available and may even show movies!

Welcome to the site, but please try and refrain from using bad language or throwing insults at other members.

Like others, I really can't understand your point.

If Virgin don't fly the route you want, then choose an airline that does. All airlines offer pretty much the same level of service and amenities on their flights to you really should not have any difficulty finding an equivalent airline.

Airlines are businesses and are run as such. If they don't think it is profitable to fly a certain route, then they won't.

Despite what some may think Blob, Virgin Atlantic are not the be all and end all of airlines...no really rhey are not! Tokyo routes are very competitive, they are many other airlines who fly they directly and indirectly from London. I am sure you will find one that fits the bill nicely.

We were meant to be flying VS to Tokyo NRT in a few weeks but the cancelled routes mean we were switched to ANA and Tokyo HND. To be perfectly honest I am very pleased with the switch, they look an excellent airline and they get very good reviews. And HND is much more convenient for Tokyo.

And apparently ANA have recently increased their selection of English films to view on the in-flight entertainment system, so that's good news for you. Check them out :)

Can I just add that if any airline would like to start a domestic service from the top of my office in Canary Wharf to my garden in Hertfordshire, I'd be prepared to switch all current and future business to them forthwith. Provided of course it was a miles and TPs earning route.

(...sits back and waits for the bidding frenzy between BA and VS to start... :w )

Blob.... sadly, I think you may have an even longer wait than me for positive results here ii)

Blob - I know it is cold comfort but Delta have lots of chargers on their flights (or the one I took 2 weeks ago did) and their film library is awesome.

That said Naruto or Nashville....I suspect no matter where big brother Delta will keep you flying ...

Anyway I want to start a petition about extending LHR to include Reading - how about it?

As in "covering with concrete and making into a new runway"? I'll sign up...

I thought that was the plan for Slough?

While I am gutted about VS dropping the route (others will know on here how much I keep going on about it v( ) I have got over it (well sort of lol) and like others have said, they are a business and if the route was not profitable then it makes sense to drop it.
Also as others have said there are "other" airlines who fly to Japan and good ones at that (BA, JAL, ANA etc). Also the other airlines all fly to HND which is actually significantly more convenient for Tokyo and the next time we go we will be looking to fly to HND.
Yes I will miss DCTI and LHR CH but the majority of the flight is spent in the air and tbh most of the time as long as you have a comfy chair and some good tv plus a few drinks what else do you need? Have been checking out BAs IFE and tbh honest its way better than VS one for that route so.....

What I DO want though is for VS to fly from STN ): not gona happen though lol

Ha, brilliant.

As to the OP, no I won't be signing that petition. If I was desperate to fly VS to Japan for whatever reason (TP run :P) then I would do so as far as I could (likely HKG or PVG) and then fly with another carrier the rest of the way. I do like to explore and experience new things.

Small inconvenience perhaps, but I think most of the fun of travelling is actually the journey and it alone would not lead me to boycott an airline for taking a sensible business decision from their perspective. Non profitable route, drop the route and go with another.. 8D

My only concern with VS at this junction is if they alter the terms granting lifetime Au or better still the business were to fold just as I reached the 10 year mark - I know, first world problems ii)

I am still very confused.

So, do you also choose which restaurants to eat at based on Virgin's in-flight menu?

I just mean I don't want to end up watching the same movie twice.

Sorry to be blunt but will you do some research before making any more comments because you are just making yourself look silly by posting incorrect information.

ANA fly from LHR to NHD (ANA are a VS Partner)

JL fly from LHR to NRT

You could fly on KL from AMS, on LX from ZRH or LH from FRA and on other airlines from other European cities.

Last I heard these are all good airlines with good products.

I did, as I looked up flights to japan and they just listed VS and BA as the only direct routes. Don't blame me for my incorrect facts, blame the websites they came from.

This website is the first result on Google BTW, when I search for "flights from London to Japan" http://www.skyscanner.net/transport/fli ... =363&age=0

Actually ANA & JAL fly from London to Tokyo, so it's not just BA.

Off topic, but on the subject of ANA, their inflight grub looks very good. They change menu every 2 months and offer both Japanese (looks like kaiseki style) and international menus in J & F. I've just downloaded the menu for my dear husband in case there was anything 'dodgy' on it!

Don't forget Etihad, Qatar and Emirates via the middle east. I don't think you can say that they suck by any means. The reality is theres plenty of quality airlines direct or indirect who fly to Japan. Whilst you as I may prefer VS, at the end of the day you can only use what is available! This might mean you have to be more flexible and compromise either flying indirectly or on another airline directly.

I looked on the LHR website for departures and expedia.

Screen Scraping websites often miss websites from their searches (or are barred from doing so)

That search you link to also shows direct flights from 'Fly Niki' and 'PIA'. Neither of which fly direct from LON to Tokyo so I'd take those search results with a pinch of salt.
#895506 by tontybear

And a further inaccuracy in that search is that why is it showing VS as flying direct when VS no longer flies to Tokyo?

Oh grow up. Do your research properly and then you won't appear to be a numbskull when you post.

OOPS I'm going to get told off :( .
