What is puzzling me about G-VZIG is why she is allowed to fly when G-VBIG is still in operation given that aircraft are recognised by the last two letters of their registration. G-VGIN was renamed because of G-VWIN still flying.

So what's the plans for the VS fleet overall? The introduction of the 789 must mean some of the existing fleet will be pushed into retirement or the leases passed on to a different operator?

The single existing configuration of the 789 is quite UC heavy compared to other aircraft too.

As long as the aircraft stays on the UK Register, then yes its ICAO address will stay the same even if it changes registration. ie. G-VBIG to G-BPEN

However if it is registered with another state, then the new authority issues a new ICAO address and its removed from the UK register.
Sorry to be pedantic, but I've re-coded quite a few aircraft in my time.

The 789 is coming in to replace the A340 and 747 fleet at LHR. By the end of next year, the 747s will be entirely gone from LHR as will most of the A340's.

Although a decision on what replaces the 747s still hasn't been made I hear ...

Sounds like VS may have done a deal to cash in A380 deposits for A350-1000's then :?

yeah. Last time I was on HKG-LHR the plane was pretty much full in all classes. I'm not going to complain though..... my next HKG-LHR flight will be in Y+ on the 787! Can't wait

JNB is not going on the 789.
Schedules show the 346 until Mar 2016, VAA decided to put the HKG on the 789 instead of the JNB

VS is cutting capacity, replacing larger aircraft with smaller ones.

The HKG route is often busy, but hardly ever full. If the change to 787 means the route remains in place, it's a small price - at least for me :) But there will be fewer G seats for sure. So, the usual advice prevails- grab 'em when you see 'em!

Doing my next 4 bookings now - two of which into Sept. - so we'll see.

Can you advise where you are getting this info from, my booking in December still has the seat map of a 789 and doing dummy bookings still shows the 789 from late October onwards. If it does go back to the 346 in some respects this would be good news as there tends to be more UC availability for rewards but I have seen nothing to indicate this change is happening.
