Crack down on what? Only perhaps the last leg being dropped, but the fares in themselves?
There's always ex-eu flights, depends on who and where. Dublin is currently excellent due to attempts to compete with direct flights to the US from there, and being very easy to get from from the uk. However, there's often ones from Amsterdam, Brussels (can get by eurostar to both of those, but brussels far more practical at 1:55, shit, I'd be in france before you'd typically made it heathrow), Oslo, Copenhagen. Recently there's been Etihad to Oz for 1600 quid business class, from Athens. Frankfurt to Bangkok was about 800 quid a few weeks ago. I don't think that's going away anytime soon.
Best ones are when a superb sale gets combined with it. They had 1K directs to west coast usa last christmas. They ex-dub'ed that one and I heard that you could get to Vegas in BA Club for 600 odd quid from Dublin. Personally, I'd go direct at that price, but whatever floats your boat.
We've already got a main thread for this. Time to perhaps wiki it and merge some?
