Given the interest in Rocket Miles shown in another thread I thought I'd do some number crunching for a hotel I'm considering booking for next month so it's a real example and wasn't done to hunt for the most miles.

Until I'd seen the thread I wasn't even aware of them so it's been an eye opener.

The hotel is the Andaz Wall Street, New York. It is a Hyatt property.

Dates - 2nd - 8th July 2015, 1 person in a King Bed room.

Rates are refundable - but with varying conditions on cancellation without charge so day before with the hotel to 25th June with RM. The rates for Expedia and RM are chargeable immediately to your CC but would be refunded later. Direct booking is charged on arrival. The pay later option on Expedia would be £ 1,440.

Prices include all taxes

The costs and miles

Direct - £ 1,293 (I have made a reservation to post on a bidding site but will cancel it shortly)

Expedia - £ 1,237

Rocket Miles - £ 1,205 with miles as follows

BA Avios - normally 6,000 but currently 8,000

AA Advantage - normally 6,000 but currently 9,000

VS FC - normally 3,000 but currently 9,000

VX Elevate - normally 3,000 but currently 6,000

Note none of the miles figures take into account any credit card spend miles or by going via shops away with VS or Gate 365 with BA etc which would benefit the Expedia option.

Nor was there any 'sign up' bonuses on offer.

Nor does it take into account any e.g. Quidco cash back for Expedia.

So what does this show?

RM looks to be offering good prices for the same room. It offers a a base rate then the possibility of miles bonus but they vary depending on the airline programme you collect in.

I did see some hotels with massive miles bonuses on offer - one with 30k - which if you chose would be very handy indeed.

I have obviously chosen a hotel that I was already considering booking with. Personally I'm not going to choose a hotel just because I can earn more miles but it's going to be part of the equation.

I chose the 4 FF programmes because I thought many V-flyers would be members of them. I've not put a purchase cost on buying the miles direct from the airline either.

What I would say is that I will look at RM when I am pricing up hotels for trips and will throw them into the pot for consideration but I won't just go for the bonus miles.

Your mileage may vary.

Stayed at the Andaz Wall St a couple of years ago and it was very good. we had a corner suite (upgraded on an offer at the time) and the fact that the rooms are a good size, the minibar comes with comp soft drinks and snacks and there is comp Coffee/Tea all day with cookies in the lobby and a happy hour with free wine early evening , made this the best hotel in NYC by far. I would return in a heartbeat.

Also a great location as it is quiet at night yet close for subway at Wall St.

Had a look at PointsHound.

Several options... one which I haven't the head on to calculate if it's good value or not.

£1225 with 3,725 miles plus sign up bonus. Rate refundable until day before arrival.

"Big Earn" rate:
£1,989 with 38,025 miles plus sign up bonus.

Also had a look at Kaligo, referred to by pjh on the MILES thread:

Total:
GBP 1,306.93
Rewards:
5,700 Miles
Bonus:
10,000 Miles
