Hi All

I was just wondering how much you would value/give to upgrade from Economy to Upper Class on a trip to Mexico. I think we got a bargain at £500 per person return but would like to know what the experts think. :)

Sounds like a good deal but obviously depends how much the Y ticket was and if miles were parted with but I'm sure you'll enjoy it all the same

At that price I would grab it quick before it disappears.

As for value for money.... only you can make a call on that.

Very good value that.

On the way out use of the club house at gatwick, day time flight so you can make the most out of upper. Extra luggage allowance is always good to bring stuff back from Mexico :)

On the way back its the value could be seen a little less I guess. The lounge in cancun is not worth it by all accounts and its an overnight flight so you dont get the full worth out of UC but you do get the bed which is a bonus for that flight but some people would be happy with PE

If you think of the cost of extra legroom or PE seats then £500 return is really good!

I personally disagree. If I could only upgrade one leg it would be the return night flight to make best use of the flatbed.
£500 is excellent value. I'm sure if you check the fares the difference would be more than double that.
Consider if you were hunting reward seats for miles. It would cost you 50000 miles to upgrade. To buy them would cost £750 and you would have had to pay a bit more for an upgradeable ticket in the first place.
Enjoy you holiday.

It's a personal thing as to whether it is "value" but in my case £500 would be out of my hands in no time. Done Cancun twice on Thomson/First Choice and if (when) I go again it'll be on VS and in UC.

I'm not sure you don't get you money's worth on overnight flights, to me the value of UC is the flat bed and a quiet cabin.

Id happily pay £500 more to fly upper class both ways on any flight over 7-8 hours.
My missus on the other hand, wouldn't.

She wasn't happy about my booking upper class using miles.
I told her that I was going upper & she can either lay in the seat opposite me, or sit in economy on her own... on an overnight flight :o) ;)

I said that once and it ended up I was sat on a BA Upper Deck Club seat, OH was in the back :0

Lesson soon learnt ):

That was a good few years ago now though!

I like your style sir, I do. A couple of years ago I think my OH would've jumped up and down about waste of money etc if I suggested business class. The first time we did I upgraded secretly and told him a few weeks before and he wasn't over the moon. But after flying, he doesn't want to go back. He's got the bug, which suits me.

And to answer the OP £500 pp for a return upgrade to UC from Y is a steal!

Id echo the comments about how poor the lounge is in Cancun. I wouldn't even bother with it. Instead, head to the restaurant that's just in front of the Virgin gate (I think it's called Margaritaville) and get a burger for a few $. Way better than the cramped seating, curled-up sandwiches and rude staff in the lounge.

Bargain at £500 however, I flew UC Dubai-Heathrow in March and it was one of the worst flights ever on VS. Unruly children left to clamber over the seats by inept flight attendants, appalling food and service almost non-existent. Flew PE to SFO last month and was amazing! Likewise flew BA Club World from LAX last October and, compared to VS UC they leve them standing at the gate.
