Virgin's fleet planning department are really the only ones who know the circumstances of why different planes are used at different times, it can be down to a number of factors such as load factors, aircraft maintenance, sub-fleet availability, more crew training on newer planes, too many hours on an older type so I'm sorry to say there isn't a definitive answer we can give here. Nothing is guaranteed until your sitting in your seat!

VS11/12 was always been going to be an Airbus 330/340/747 mix this summer. Route has always been subject to varying loads.

Things will I suspect settle eventually to either A333 or 787 depending on yield and what the competition offers. On my DEL fleet UK cabin crew were saying they were short of CC trained for the 787 at the moment - all national (DEL) based crew have been trained though so this is an easy route to crew on the 789 at present.

Your just unfortunate with the Schedule change.
Currently the 747 is flying Fri-Mon, but that seems to be changing to Monday & Sunday. This weekend is the last Fri-Mon 747s

At least that my interpretation.

I think BOS is also quite an important cargo route for VS as well which again will determine what type of A/C they use.
