Hi All,

Can anybody please remind me how to work out the extra tax to pay when going from M to G with miles? I can't remember how to do this and how it differs if upgrading one way, or both ways etc.. I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere before.

Cheers :)

I normally price up an all miles Y then an all miles J and work out the difference. It's ballpark, not sure if that's totally correct!

I use a similar method, except that I look at the fare breakdown on revenue tickets rather than full reward. I'm not sure if the results are the same but my calculations are normally within 50p either side :D

Just a quick update:

I have found that buying the few extra miles to do a full reward fare for both of us is HUGELY cheaper than any upgrade combination! Never thought that buying miles would work out the best deal. :D

This if often the case, but you need to offset against this the fact that you don't earn any miles on a full reward redemption, unlike - for example - an M-G upgrade, where you earn miles on the revenue (M) portion of the fare.

Perhaps more importantly for those trying to attain or maintain Ag or Au status, full reward redemptions also don't earn Tier Points either, unlike an M-G upgrade which does earn TPs (and at a slightly higher number than the most restrictive Y fares) . Both miles and TPs are highly subjective in their valuation, so for many the M-G route is a significantly more 'valuable' use of miles. But then what one chooses to do with cold, hard cash is also subjective! So for many, straight G reward redemptions (with a miles top-up if needed) offer the best value.

This is all true.

I think my flight booking habits always reflect my financial climate and future travel plans. Right now my house is being built. It's pretty stressful and draining on resources, due to be completed by the end of the year. I can't think of anything nicer than celebrating while kicked back in the Clubhouse with a champers, without breaking the bank too much. Also I don't envision another trip immediatly afterwards, as I focus on being a grown up for a while with the house, so the non-miles-earning shouldn't bother me... That said as always i'll probably pine for another UC experience as soon as the house dust settles!
