With the forthcoming upgrade devaluations it's clear that the value of a VS mile is on a downward trend. I've been saving for Necker at 1.2M miles and currently have just shy of 1M (mostly earned the hard way). I'm wondering whether to earn the remaining 200K miles (it will take 3-4 months) and hope the goal posts don't move at the last minute, or just burn them before they become less valuable. Perhaps 3 X 3 night stays at the Lodge? It's difficult to tell without access to the Crawley towers crystal ball 8-)

That is one hell of a loaded statement which would depend on your baseline. As I pointed out in another thread, VS used to charge 20K miles for one way, single cabin upgrades LHR -JFK (40K from EC-UC) .. under the upgrade table taking effect on march 1st you would still be 5K better off than that if doing a LHR-JFK run..

They lowered the bar in line with competition back in 2011/12, who is to say they will not do it again, or perhaps they will raise it further... it all depends on the market. It is not the depreciation of a VS mile that you need to be looking at but the value of an airline mile across the networks in which they compete.. tricky one.

Save for Necker ;-)

The documentary put me off ever wanting to go. Its looks absolutely beautiful, but I think the people you would be stuck there with would ruin it for me. Personal opinion - but just not how I would want to holiday.

V-Flyer Enjoyingit went to Necker last year. Though I couldn't find a detailed TR on the Necker experience they do comment on it in a reply to the TR here.

If it has been a goal, I would wait for Neker. Having said that I have "cashed in" a couple of Neker trips worth of miles over the years & enjoyed spending every mile.

Save it for Necker! Surely a once in a lifetime opportunity you will never forget?

Wish I had saved all mine and eventually got there...between me and my partner we have roughly achieved around 880K (since 2007!)

If you want Necker then save for it.

Personally I would rather spend the miles elsewhere and the documentary only confirmed that for me.

I'm heading there in September after spending all my remaining miles on it. Sadly have to fly BA to get there (for the first time in a billion years) but should be fun. I'll let you know how it is.

For what it's worth, a friend of mine went there and mentioned it was nothing like the documentary. It was incredibly private during the day and the dining was the only time he met lots of the other people.

I guess the experience will largely hinge on who the other guests are. If it's you and 13 other couples all doing their own thing it'll be fine but if it's you and a group of 26 on a family reunion or, perish the thought, corporate jolly (unlikely, admittedly!) it'll be hell on earth.
