I did try once but the starting price for a bid to upgrade from PE to Upper LGW to MCO was over £900 per person one way so we flew PE.

Never tried bidding as it seems an expensive way to get into UC. If you have a PE ticket then you need 25k miles which you can buy for less than £400.

You usually don't buy an upgradable PE ticket, so its the cost of the upgradeable ticket (I found at least 1.4K) ,plus miles.

And that's one way.

Only the K ticket in PE is not upgradable with miles. The H ticket to HKG is usually only about £100 more than the K (which is the lowest PE). My guess is you will have paid around £1300 for your PE ticket and an H will be about £1500 roundtrip.
So you have the modest extra fare plus the miles. I think you may be referring to the full ware W when you mention £1400 extra.

Usually, when I've looked (and its usually vegas or new york), an upgradable PE fare is about 50% higher than a real sale fare (like 900 PE to vegas) or 1/3 higher than a normal PE fare.

I'd buy from Dublin personally, which would be cheaper plus the miles. Though tends to be less useful eastbound.
