Had an email from Flying Club.

500 bonus miles on a purchase of a Virgin Trains ticket.

I found a child's single from B'ham Internatiomnal to B'ham New Street for £1.50.

Seems reasonable value for 500 miles if you need a small top up.

Ts and Cs below

1. Promotional period is between 7 July and 31 July 2016. Booking must be made by 23:59 on 31 July 2016 for travel until 23:59 on 23 Oct 2016

2. The offer is only valid for Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members who book Virgin Trains East Coast tickets at virgintrainseastcoast.com and Virgin Trains West Coast tickets at virgintrains.co.uk between 7 July and 31 July 2016. Miles are not valid on tickets purchased for other train companies.

3. 500 bonus miles applies to the first Virgin Trains East Coast tickets and Virgin Trains West Coast tickets purchased during the promotional period. Please see full terms and conditions, visit virgintrainseastcoast.com for Virgin Trains East Coast and virgintrains.co.uk for Virgin Trains West Coast.

4. Bonus miles will be credited to customer accounts by 31 August 2016.

Birmingham International -> Coventry gives a Child's Anytime Day Single for £0.95 - bargain! Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you need to spend £1 or over to trigger the bonus.

From Head for Points:

Do NOT book anything for under £1 as this may not earn you the bonus. The transaction is too small to generate base points (2 per £1) and if no base points are sent to Flying Club they won’t know they need to add your bonus

Thanks for the heads up.

Has anyone calculated how much VS miles are generally worth nowadays? I generally use 1p a mile for most programmes so this would be £3.50 profit using that rule of thumb.

Nice tip! Thank you for the heads-up.

I have just booked a child ticket for £1.20. Birmingham New Street to Birmingham International actually was for some reason cheaper than the reverse route you suggested.

I also used my VS Amex card :-D

500 bonus points plus another point for the VSAMEX spend - for £1.20. Seems like a good deal. :)

I'd be tempted not to do it via Topcashback or ShopsAway for a handful of miles just in case it invalidates the issue of the 500 bonus as you will not know until August and it is on one, the first, transaction only. Amex yes...
