Hi,

New to the forum!!

We are booked to fly to New York with ex EU fare from DUB-LHR-JFK-LHR-DUB. BA are the carrier to and from Dublin and Virgin are the Transatlantic route both ways

We are travelling as a family with 3 adults and four children, ages 8,10,12,14. I have three queries if you could help

1) When we fly to LHR from DUB with BA, we have an overnight stopover of just under 24hrs, will they allow us to only check to LHR and recheck with Virgin the next day?

2 )On the return we also have an overnight stopover of just under 24hrs ( we land at 20.30hrs and fly to DUB at 19.30hrs the next day). Will the check in staff at JFK be OK with short checking, I don't think its an unreasonable request having four children with us? and pretty much a full day in London

3) Would you call Virgin or email them and ask them or would that cause an issue?

I can't see a problem, but would appreciate your advice or experiences.

Thanks,

Cath

You should have no problem as there is an over night stop involved between the flights.

The issues people are having with short checking is when the flights are on the same day from the same airport.

There is no need to call VS and even if you did it wouldn't cause any issues.

Thanks Tonty, I have heard that LHR do not store baggage overnight anyway, but I can't find any information on that anywhere, also are the stops classed as a stopover, or a connection with having overnight stays at each end less than 24hrs.

Thanks again,

Cath

With an overnight connection of close on 24hrs each way, short-checking of the bags should not even blink an eyelid. It's hardly unreasonable to want access to packed toiletries / clean clothes on a stopover of this length.

As above, add to the equation that LHR don't want bags in the baggage system store overnight for many reasons - security doubtless being one.

I don't think they can check through to their destination in both cases, unless someone can correct me....

Thanks for your help guys, its really appreciated, I'm with you really, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to collect your bags and change clothes etc on a near 24hr stopover.
