Hi all,
For background, I have been a Virgin Flying club member for about 4 years, the first 2-3 years were pretty much recreational, but the last 18 months have been manically busy (88 tier points in 17 months, with another 20 booked before the end of this calendar year) - all bar 5 of these points have been on VS metal, and the 5 that weren't were on a codeshare booked through VA.
Over the past 18 months, and especially when I hit gold for the first time (was silver for 2 years), I have noticed a few little step changes in the service towards me (generally good changes!), but overall the service on the flights seems to be in a bit of decline. I started researching this today, and came across Flyer Talk, and then found a link to a thread here called "Big changes", which may explain a few things!!! I had the opportunity to benchmark this recently, and flew Delta one on my return leg - and I have to say, I prefer the seat to the UC seats on most of the VS metal, more spacious, "proper" inseat power, more comfy bed, better amenity kit etc, but the service SUCKED!!! Really was put off by that, and it reinforced my loyalty to VS, even with the sense of degradation that is seemingly apparent. I was actually taken aback on a flight with VS recently - where I was booked into a middle seat in the centre of the cabin (due to a last minute change in booking), but at the gate, I got moved (without asking) to the front bulkhead window seat - thought it was a bit odd. The person next to me had the same thing - the cabin supervisor came over before take off and welcomed us both on board personally, thanked us for being VA regulars and gave us a bottle of bubbly as "an apology for not being able to get us into UC". So this reinforces my love for VS!
So, on my last flight, I was indulging in some idle chit chat with the check in guy whilst waiting for the baggage conveyor to start working, and he said to me that there were more changes coming to the flying club, but didn't have any details about it. Does anyone here know anything about this? He said the changes would be announced mid November. I am aware that the last set of changes were a tad controversial (higher costs in miles for upgrades, but more ticket classes upgradeable, so was a mixed bag). I'm just wondering whats in store for "us" next.
Last thing, an I suspect this may be controversial, but I am relatively new to regular flying (if you call 18months new. I do in the scheme of things), and I am interested in opinions on how to handle my relationship and loyalties. The majority (95%) of my distance work is in the US, with a small part in the EU. I am already VS Gold, got that in Feb this year, and have 48 TP's in the account, with about 20 more booked before renewal - and that could quite easily increase. I have been reading that a lot of people switch airlines at 60 TPs, and use another airline to get status elsewhere. This I suppose makes sense, If I were to go with BA for example, I have nearly 18 months of VS Gold as a buffer to get status with BA - which could help out with the small amount of EU travel I do. The only counter argument to this is, is that I fly to the US a lot (at least once a month, often twice), and I have also read that there is a level above Gold with VS, that can make the booking processes easier (which would make me very happy - as I spend too much time buggering about on the site, finding flights with decently priced availability, and upgrade capacity etc) - is that worth staying 100% loyal to VS for? Does anyone have a benchmark at what point that is achieved?
Sorry for the rabbling post - Just hard to get all my thoughts down in one hit!
Any thoughts/advice appreciated on the "should I stay loyal" thing, and I am going to watch with baited traps about the "November Changes"!!
Thanks in advance.
