Baggage "connection" time at Heathrow

Getting bored (and cold) already and pricing up next flights.

If a book an inbound to Heathrow with a 10 hour 15 mins connection time to Dublin on an Ex-Dub ticket, what's the chances in MIA that the bags wouldn't be booked straight through to Dublin.

I realise that short connections will automatically be but wondered about longer ones.

If you say you want to use revivals lounge I think they will short check I tried this on my trip from la in August they were going to do it until he checked and came back and said connection time was to short I had about 2 30 mins connection time

Or tell them you have a day-room booked at one of the hotels & want to shower, sleep & change, so need your bags in London. If you are actually planning on taking the flight to Dublin (i.e. not doing a runner and missing the final leg) then a day room may be a good idea anyway.

You cannot rely on them not short checking.

The sure ways of getting them to do it is to

(a) have your flights to DUB the day after you land or

(b) the flight to DUB is from another airport the same day you do land.

You could also price up a trip that simply ends at LHR. Yes this will be more expensive than a 'full' ex-EU but will still be less than a straight ex-UK flight.


I'm no longer confident that 'excuses' such as "presents for a friend I'm meeting"; "I need to had over important documents" or "change of clothes after a shower in revivals" will cut the mustard for much longer.

I always ensure that last sector departs Gatwick (if I'm arriving in to Heathrow) or vice versa - that way you're guaranteed not to have luggage short checked

That is the only "safe" way now given the publicity that ex-EU ticketing has had on various forums / in the press. The airlines are catching on to it & looking to catch people out who intend to do a runner before the last flight leg.

Given that we won't see the 3rd runway actually built at Heathrow for a good 10yrs (more like 15 no doubt), it will be light years before there is secure inter-airport baggage transfer between LHR & LGW - especially due to separate ownership. The switch of airport trick / overnight stay in London may work for quite a while longer.
