Hi all

It would seem we need to book our flights to NYC before the 13th Nov, the perfect excuse to get hubby to dust off his wallet and miles sooner rather than later - result ! :D
PE out and UC return, using a combo of miles and EC/PE vouchers for 3 passengers.

This might be a silly question but are there any return flight times from JFK that are better than others. We were thinking of returning on the 8pm flight, purely to get the most of our last day but not be too late getting to the airport.
Does anyone have a favourite flight - based on aircraft or any other factors I have not thought of ?

many thanks
L2H

Me? I'd fly out midday early afternoon in Upper having spent a few hours in the Clubhouse and be able to maximise the inflight service and then fly back in PE on the last flight of the day.

Also you have until the 16th January to book before they implement the increase off peak/peak fares.

Thanks NYC

Hubby is FC Gold so we will have access to the Clubhouse for outbound and have every intention of 'milking it' :-D . Would like to have Upper inbound as its a night flight.

Shhh, don't tell Mr L2H that, he doesn't need to know as I want to get the flights secured sooner rather than later. 8-)

To a degree it depends what you need to do the day you arrive back at LHR.

If you have to go to work or have a long trip to get back home then an earlier JFK departure an hence LHR arrival might suit.

If you are in no rush then get the latest departing JFK flight. It means you have more 'last day time' before heading to JFK. It also means you're less likely to get caught in the rush hour traffic - which you certainly would heading for the 8.00PM flight.

To a degree it also depends on the cost. If the 8.00PM is significantly cheaper than a later one then I'd rather have the ££ in my pocket.

I'd still do it that way, i know others disagree but it seems a waste to spend it sleeping if its a treat.

I've only ever flown UC once was supposed to be on VS9 which was meant to leave at 4pm but left at closer to 9pm so after 8/9 hours in the clubhouse (hic) i ended up sleeping most of the flight and felt like i'd missed out...

Using the vouchers we got in compensation to hopefully give UC another go next summer.

It's a tricky one. Hubby does a lot of trans-atlantic travel and is used to having a flat bed for an overnighter, so that would be his preference. I do agree it is nice to be awake and enjoy the experience.

We also want to do DXB next year (during the new 'off peak' period thankfully), and if we blow all our miles on NYC UC both ways (not using the vouchers - I am pretty sure you cannot upgrade to UC from this type of fare) we would be left with the same decision for the DXB trip, unless hubby can somehow expedite his mileage earning !
As it is he is travelling less to US at the moment and using BA more for European travel.

Decisions, decisions !

rather than basing it on leaving time, why not look at arriving time in the UK? Do you want to negotiate Heathrow exit during rush hour?
UC coming back all the way. You can have a nice sleep & reduce jet lag + its much cheaper in taxes! Thats £200 each extra spending money!

I'd opt for the Dreamliner over most other options now. We both felt so refreshed having come back on one from Miami.

It also depends if you can sleep on a plane. I find it difficult, even in UC, and tend to only get about an hour. For that reason, I prefer one of the earlier flights and then straight home to bed for a few hours. The 10pm doesn't arrive until 10am so it would mean us not getting to bed until 11am earliest; made that mistake once and I have no idea what time zone I ended up on.

Remember there's also a day flight from JFK. It does mean a very early start but you get a full final day in New York, it's a good option if you hate night flights and many people report feeling far less jetlagged.

Not that I'm obsessed you understand, but when we took the day flight the licensing hours meant the CH was dry.

Thats why I prefer the night flight. Throw a lot of drinks down your throat, have a sleep, wake up an hour before landing.

Call me obsessive......"dry".......me fighting the signs of panic may become too obvious :-|
