Just a query, which would people say were the better premium economy seats on the 787 and the 747?

I tend to prefer a window seat, but coming back on a 747 from Las Vegas to Manchester, there's only middle seats available, and nothing in the bubble. Is this likely to change? If I ring them will they have other options or will they just see the same seat map?

At the moment we're booked in 24A and 24C on the outbound 787 from Heathrow to SFO

Coming back we're in 18D and 18E on the 747 from Vegas to Manchester.

If you’re travelling as a two, on both the 787 and 747, I like to go for any two window seats (bubble preferable on the 747).

My total preference (if the seat map is empty on either aircraft) is the last row on the A side because I can fully recline straight after take off on a day flight without feeling guilty (although you are last with the food!)

In your situation on the return 747, don’t forget the first row downstairs of PE and 2 of the first row of the bubble are always blocked off to select; so get to the airport early and hopefully the check in staff can move you into them. In terms of the middle seats, I have no preference in your situation. (I would avoid the last row in the middle as you’re next to the toilets!) Calling won’t help as they will see the same map you can.

Bulk-head seats are always the best PE seats to sit in, if you can get them. I much prefer the foot cushion the crew hand out after takeoff rather than those silly (and rather pointless IMHO) foot rest bars the other PE seats come with.

It depends on your preferences really.

My 2cents..

  • James' point about the footrests is a good one, but the bulkhead PE seats compromise in the sense that the IFE is on an arm that comes out of the arm rest, rather than in a seat back and I find some of the arms a little battered and struggle to stay upright. Whilst the screen is the same, I prefer it being in the seat back.
  • On the 787, I'd take a pair of window seats on the left hand side.
  • On the 747, i'd take a pair of window seats towards the rear, left hand side of the main PE cabin on the lower deck. Boarding and disembarking is usually through door 2L, so you should be off quick.
  • On the 747, i'd avoid the upper deck if you are looking for a quick departure. You will end up deplaning behind a load of Economy passengers. But it feels special up there, so its entirely up to you.

Can only speak for the upstairs, but in my experience yeah they have full recline. I usually try to go bubble where possible as its a lot quieter IMO, and have currently got bubble seats 24 A/C for my return from Vegas to Manchester in October. Outbound we have connections in SFO and LAX before getting to Vegas, so we'll be going out in economy in one of the ex Air Berlin 330-200's sadly, however this option did save us £600 as a couple to spend out there instead :-)
