Just took the flight between LHR and HKG and found that the amenity kit is downgraded.

They usual plastic bag is not provided in the economy. Instead of the Hershel bag in Premium, the plastic bag is now given.

Just wonder if it is the same in other route.

I flew MCO-MAN in late July and received the Herschel wallet as I have in the past, though it was a garish red wallet instead of the classier (and more reusable) grey version. I wonder what others have experienced.

The only thing I use out of that amenity kit are toothbrush and toothpaste so the other things go to waste. If I know I won't get a kit for my trip to HKG in November then at least I know beforehand to bring my own.

Building on what Slimpy says...

I believe (and fully willing to be corrected if I am wrong), that amenity kit policy is something like this based on my observations -

Upper both day & night flights - always get an amenity kit regardless of length of flight.
Premium day flight under 9 hours - no amenity kit.
Premium over 9 hours or overnight - amenity kit.
Economy day flight under 9 hours - no amenity kit.
Economy over 9 hours or overnight - amenity kit.

It's also worth noting, that like with the menus in Premium, sometimes the kits are forgotten and on flights that should have them - you don't.

Much like my upgrade philosophies, this is all based on observation and not from an official source.

This is where the thread all started. The HKG flight is over 9hrs and night flight but yet no amenity kit in PE. I think the crew may have made a mistake or the kits weren’t loaded.

Just a quick update after a perfectly pleasant PE flight to Seattle - for which the web site quotes a 9 hr 40 minute duration - I asked a CC and was told the amenity kits are just for night flights. One of the red plastic zip lock packs did end up on my seat though as I’d forgotten my pen for my puzzle book!

I recently flew UC Gatwick to Barbados and got the grey amenity kit, however on the way back on a night flight UC, we didnt get an amenity kit. Instead the CC came round with a box holding various bits for us to choose. They said they were trailling a new way to offer amenities and then gave us a feedback card to fill out.

No matter how nice that box looked.... no thanks! That would be a big step down.

Sounds suspiciously like a "return-by-stealth" of the infamous Upper Class Scrooge Pack amenity kit which was around back in about 2006-2008. It was crap too and I think even Virgin noticed that it was a step too far for business class passengers. Let's hope lightning does not strike twice!

Actually, thinking about it on my UC return from LHR to DEL the previous week, two types of kits. outbound the usual zip top purple and grey Herschel bag, on the trip home it was a Herschel zip top but with a side zip for a separate storage slot , same colour and contents though.

Which probably explains why VS would dearly love to get rid of them.

They’re one of those things that people expect to get, complain if they don’t but in reality hardly use. There must be thousands of them gathering dust in sock drawers.

Handing out the individual contents on request would be far less wasteful.
