Hi all. With 8 months to go until we fly out to Orlando next May, we keep checking the seating plan and it's only 1/3 full would virgin still fly being so empty? Or will we be transferred to the earlier vs27

The seating plan isn't really a guide to how many seats have been sold.
8 months is still a long time for them to sell more tickets.
BUT if it really is empty they may well merge two flights. That has happened to us before.
I had booked early and chosen my seats, then got moved and lost them.
I had a bit of a moan and they very kindly let me have the same seats on the new flight.
What you can hope for is that they have a plane and a half's worth of passengers and fly yours half full.

A third full with 8 months to go is pretty good. And given that most people don’t select seats when they book, it’s safe to assume the flight will be considerably more than a third full already.

Many people traditionally book their holidays after Christmas so I’d be reasonably confident that a flight to MCO in May will leave full.

May 30th is in a Bank holiday and school half term week in,lots of the county so it is unlikely they would cancel because of a low load on an outbound. Remember the plane could very well be ram packed on the return.

There are also other reasons to still fly including crew positioning, cargo loads and slot sitting.

Seat maps are useless at working out how busy a flight is at any time let alone this far in advance especially when people have to pay for them. Even people with free seat selection aren’t always obsessed with selecting a seat.

Depends on the time of year! I've done midweek flights in early February (over 2 weeks away from half term) that have had under 150 pax onboard... on a 747 that can seat 450. Some days in the real low season Virgin only do two flights a day to Orlando, one from LGW & one from MAN - and not even daily sometimes.

That said, the 30 May 2019 that the OP mentions - am sure the full flying programme to MCO will run then. It's the end of half term & May half term tends to be the same across most of England due to GCSE / A Level exams (other half terms can shift by a week depending on your area). I've done lots of MAN-MCO returns in May in the past and they have always been pretty full - if not completely full. Did a week in Orlando in early June this year and the flights from & back to MAN were about 90% full both ways.

Mrs D and myself did the VS15 to Orlando a few years ago in May and there were only 122 passengers on board, the steward on board told us that as it was the end of half term week the aircraft was full for the return, we were in PE in the bubble and everyone had a window seat, very nice flight!

Your flight still has months to fill up and the seat map is no indication as to how many people are on the plane. We flew out in early May this year and right up to a day or so before the flight, it still looked empty as a lot of people don't pre-book seats. On the day, it was completely full. I would not worry about your flight being cancelled at this stage.

This also happened to us two years ago. We were booked on the VS075/076 and we selected our seats, then with 9 months to go it got merged into the VS073/74. It involved several calls to FC to get seats allocated as VS were still using their old IT system at the time and we couldn't select our new seats online. We got slightly different seats to the ones we had initially selected on the original flights, but they were fine.

I should also add that both flights were almost full, so VS were justified in merging them, though it was a shame the 75/76 were cancelled as it meant leaving MAN 2 hours later than planned and we had a 2 hour drive ahead of us upon arrival. Thankfully the flight was on time and my predicted ETA at our final destination was bang on, so all was well in the end.
