Bidding for an upgrade

Apologies if this has already been asked a few times on here!

Me and my girlfriend are flying out to Cancun on the 17th November, and after experiencing upper class on our way back from Jamaica in April, I have decided to put a bid in to upgrade to upper (Just for the way out). We're on a 747 and there are two seats left in upper - I've been hoping they come up for a miles redemption but nothing so far, and I imagine competition will be fierce given the tiny upper cabin.


My issue is that my girlfriend isn't a great flyer at all! Given the flight is over 10 hours, we would need to be sat next to each other ideally. What is the process if my bid is successful and it turns out that the two remaining seats are 12A+12K for example and not really near each other? Can I then backtrack or am I obliged to pay and take the upgrade?

For context we are currently booked in 24H+24K

Looking at expert flyer, its showing 6a and 6k free - if that's accurate (and it should pretty much be) you cant get much closer together

from reading the T&Cs - # 12 once your bid has been accepted then you can't cancel it. Once VS had approved your bid they take the cash from your credit card.

If your bid has not been accepted or rejected, you can cancel or amend it via the Your Bid link contained in the confirmation email received after your bid was submitted. If you are unable to amend or cancel your bid through the link and you are within 7 days of your flight, your bid may have been accepted, and in which case your booking will be in the process of getting upgraded, or your bid may have been rejected. In either situation you will not be able to cancel or amend your bid.

Was lucky enough to get these on the previously mentioned flight. I’m amazed they’re still free when you consider there’s only 2 seats going in that cabin.

Will just have to see if we are lucky next week I suppose!

I am amazed those are the free seats.
I know some say they are cramped because the foot rest of the two seats are touching.
There are no overhead lockers.
However we always try and get them if flying on the 747 because it's like having your own little cabin tucked up the front.

6A/K are "horses for courses" seats IMO. We've had them once as a couple and yes, they are very close together, but we felt it was too close & the lack of overhead lockers above was an inconvenience to us. Yes, there is a shelf-type space in front of the seat where you can have stuff in-flight, but not for takeoff or landing. Certainly if you are not travelling as a couple the 6A/K are possibly the two worst seats in the cabin as you are so close to the other passenger.

We prefer 9A/K on the 747 - nicely in the middle of the cabin and not right next to the bar. For the times we want to sit together (normally mealtime) one of us just sits on the other persons ottomann.

I do recall one occasion in the Delta Sky Club at MCO when they paged us and asked us to move from 9A/K to 12/K - err, no thanks. Moving to the worst two seats in the OC cabin (in our opinion).

I'm always surprised how many people don't like the seats by the bar on the 747, we always choose them!
We just must be the gregarious type as we're not overly indulgent on alcohol!

In all honesty with only 14 seats up there I've never had cause to complain about my fellow cabin travellers before to be honest and found the space fine and enjoy chatting with crew and fellow passengers passing by.

As far as bidding goes we've always been pretty successful and generally very much at the lower end of the sliding scale but once your bid is accepted they take the money from your card and it's game over.

Just by way of an update....

.... managed to grab 6A and 6K this morning as a miles redemption! Saves a fair bit compared to what the bid would have been as well!

If you board early you'll be able to use the overhead locker nearest the front.
And you'll probably get a refill on you Champagne while you wait.
