Anyone interested in getting up to 50% bonus miles (Buy Miles) ?
Offer is available until the 16th Feb. Also, Virgin have extended the amount you can buy to 150,000 miles :D
I received email this morning - have already taken advantage :-)

I’m just doing the math... I’m going to base my sums on east coast and out of school holidays and with a mileage balance close to 0. I’m pretty much there at the moment...

You can get 225,000 miles for £2265. That would give 2 UC returns, circa £1700 each, and 35,000 miles left over. However, it would also cost £670 + £670 in their ridiculous surcharges.

I’d pay £3400 for two UC cash flights and earn 46,000 miles or spend £3605 on this mileage deal and have 35,000 miles.

A close one to call as I’m aware not all flights are £1700 to the east coast, albeit some cheaper.

An okay deal for reds, an okay gamble for silver and awful for golds. Unless I’ve done the whole thing wrong - entirely possible and likely.

Maybe West Coast / upgrade options are better with this, but none spring to mind.

The “ridiculous” surcharges exist to try to stop you doing precisely what you’re considering!

The real value from using miles, of course, comes if reward seats are available on flights where only the expensive fare buckets are on sale.

If you need to book last minute you can get a real bargain - but of course you take a big gamble on there being availability.

Unless you have a very specific redemption in mind where the price works these are never good deals. Buying large numbers of points on spec at the prices they’re sold at almost always fails a logic check. Broadly speaking you’re exchanging the most widely accepted currency, cash, for a currency of limited use, particular airline(s) only on certain flights. Not to mention that the issuing bank, in this case Virgin, can devalue said currency at anytime.
